Home made Awnings

Hi Guy's, i'm wanting to make an awning for the side of my LR Discovery II but not sure on the best way to attach it to the side of the truck as I don't have a roof rack & was wondering if you had any suggestions how to over come this.
I've got a 6x8ft tarp, guide ropes & so poles that I think will do. Mainly wanting the awning for cooking under & to provide some rain cover over our tent & on the rare time we do get really hot sunny days here in the UK a bit of shade aswell
Thanks for any help

You can see some details of my DIY setup in the "Post Your Camp Awnings" thread here:

I used an expanding painters pole to give me one side of the awning attached to the car, wide enough to keep things taught. I attached mine to the roof rack because it was there, but you could find a lot of ways to attach a painters pole. Doesn't the Disco at least have the rails running fore/aft? You could probably use U-bolts like I did, only attach direct to the rail.

Here's a couple more pictures that aren't in that thread:

You can see the pole does all the "work", you just need to find some way to fasten it to/near the roof.

Assuming you have a rain gutter (cause I can't remember if the Disco II does or not) the easiest way is to use some spring clamps and clamp it to your rain gutter. This won't seal well and will leak though. A better method is to take a small diameter piece of pvc or conduit and roll your tarp around that then clamp it to the rain gutter. You'll also need some extending poles to get the tarp either higher or lower than where it's clamped or it'll collect water. When it's raining, I usually put another pole in the middle to create a peak. I put an old tennis ball over the pole so it doesn't poke through the tarp. It's not going to win you any awards and people with Fiammas will look at you with upturned noses but I think my total cost for this setup is less than $20 including some camping poles from Wal-Mart and spring clamp I had around the shop.
