After deciding on a 4x4 1991 Jeep comanche for its off road capabilities, small size and overall good looks, I decided to build a camper aboard the bed from scratch, on my own.
I'll spare you the essay about the project and let the photos and video speak for themselves, but here are some of the basic details... I'ts a forward hinging, wooden cabover camper. Its frame is welded 3/4" steel, sheeted in birch ply, and fiberglassed with epoxy to keep watertight. Im guessing the whole thing is about 400 lbs, dry. The roof pops up with the help off two 100 lb. shocks and the side material is a rubberized nylon. The roof is angle to a peak to help with water drainage and strength. On the inside, I have a cabinet to the right for the stove and cooking materials and along the back, towards the cab, is a trunk for gear. The bed slides out from the 3' cabover section to form a 6' bed. A roof vent towards the back. Two slider windows on the side. A old camper shell window on the back as well as cab-through slider.
I started building this at the beginning of sept '13 and it took two solid months, working on it everyday. I set out building with the goal of driving north from Carpinteria, CA to Haida Gwaii islands in northern British Columbia to surf, fly fish and camp around. I left on the trip at the end of Oct and spent just shy of a month on the road.
The following are some photos from the trip and a two part short video from the project. Part two comes out Feb 19th... so stay posted here if interested in watching the second.
