Hood Blackouts

I'm about to start producing hood blackouts; My question is, what could I change to make mine better? I'm trying to contact the direct end-user, and see what they want, and how I can improve.

Here are the ideas I had, tell me if you agree or disagree:

  • two piece blackout, easier to install?
  • designs cut into blackout
  • designs ontop of blacout
  • colored blackouts (matte colors)
anything else?

would anyone be interested in one?

Mine is a one peice design, I wanted one peice, it looks better when done and less of a chance that it will peel up over time.

I have the Land Rover cut in to mine so the hood color shows through.

I think there is a hole in the market right now, there are a couple of companies that do blackouts, but none that offer cutouts or colored overlays on there website.

Yeah, there could be a market. I myself am going to do one, but I was planning on doing it with paint instead. But themed vinyl blackouts would be neat.

You could do really discrete things. Like have the blackout flat black, but with a gloss black inlay so it only shows up at certain angles. Or multi coloured things... Anything the customer wanted.

The only thing with universal appeal I think, would be either a LR oval, or maybe a map of the world. I bet there would be some good demand for that.

great idea :)

Please make sure that if you start marketing/selling to ExPo members, you become a sponsor of ExPo. If is very reasonable, and helps pay for the server, etc.

You can contact Jeremy: guide (@) expeditionswest.com

once I make some money, I would LOVE to become an expo sponsor!

I would do the peel backing in several sections, so you can position it easier and avoid bubbles. Maybe start with a 4" section near the windshield, then work your way towards the headlights.

The FJ Cruiser hood begs for a blackout and no one is serving that market yet. And that market is good sized with a demographic that will spend some money...no matter if the wheel or not.
I like the matt w/ gloss design concept. Also the map of the world would catch attention...especially if folks could order just the continents they wanted...
North America so you could use thin strips to highlight trips
North & South America
Oz
Africa

Just some random thoughts....hey the Texas guys might just pay for that state all by itself :)

The FJ will be added to the list;

The only issue I could see with gloss black accents is defeating the purpose of having the blackout, same as with having a large cutout in the middle, I'll create it, but I dont want to offer a bad product.

Now I just need trucks to create templates from.

Unfortunately, it can't work that way :) I hope you understand.

We just cannot allow unlimited commercial posting or PMs to ExPo members, as it would just become a big marketing free-for-all.

Please read the forum rules here:

I understand, I've emailed jeremy, hopefully I can figure everything out within the next few days with him. Just waiting for a response.

If you are brave enough to do it yourself like I was, start at the front. Get the front end and sides lined-up and work to the back. It will strecth and if you end at the windsheild, you can trim the extra easier then trimming the front edge.
