House battery

had to replace my batteries this past weekend. Looks like one of the kids left a light on for the past month or so. dead dead dead.

also had to re-do the underneath battery cable end - corroded big time, and in the name of expedience, I didn't hook the inverter back to the underneath battery.

I could re-do it, but is it better to just get a house battery and save the rig batteries for starting duty? I'd have to hook up some sort of charging system for the house batt if I go with a separate one. Advantages/disadvantages either way?

There is no down side to a house battery, other than cost. The alternator should charge it just fine and you will need a battery separator. If the batteries are mounted in an inaccessible spot, maybe use AGM's - no maintenance required.
