How does one camp with a pooch and a RTT?

I have yet to have this experience but I assure my wife it can be done. Fall is coming up and camping is on the menu here in FL and where ever else we might go. Cayman my Vizsla is now 49lbs. and could probably be trained to climb the ladder on the hannibal but how the heck do I get her down? Yes she could sleep outside but she wouldn't have it. even now she crowding the laptop off my lap so she can lay next to me. As you can see she likes to help with everything.

Can she sleep in the truck?

You could...just climb up there and get her.

I don't have that problem, since I have a Wildernest...:p She doesn't like sleeping with us anyway, I bring her dogbed with, and she sleeps on the floor of the bed. Works out well, when she has been playing the water. ;)

Good thread.. since we just aquired a new member of the family also. I think what we are going to do is carry her up the ladder and make room for her by our toes. Our pooch is only 15lbs though. I would really like to just lay her bed down in the cruiser with the window cracked.. but im sure she'll wine all night long. I'll try the second option first... I don't know what i would do if i had a dog your size. Second tent just for the dog? lol

That's our problem- if there's water, our pup will find it.

That makes it impossible for us to sleep with him since everything gets soaked. I built this waterproof platform for him:

Fortunately, he loves it and often chooses to sleep in there even when we're at home. My wife and I are getting a RTT and plan to leave the pooch "downstairs".

This came up a while ago and there were basically two answers:
a. you don't
b. you set the tent up over the front of the truck (ladder resting on ARB bumper), put dog on hood, climb on bumper, put dog in tent, climb in tent, reverse.

A sounds a lot more practical than B, but neither sound like good options.

Teach it to climb :D

This is Jada, our GS puppy, she's about 60 lbs now, likely will end up ~85lbs... she sleeps like a rock up in the tent

Wife- 105 lbs (don't tell her I said that!!!)
Fat Yellow Lab - 80 lbs (don't tell her I said that!!!)
Fat me - 205

Works out pretty good, my wife climbs up first, I grab the pooch go up the ladder about half way and we stuff her up there. Down is the hard part, she gets kind of impatient and tends to lauch and I play center fielder and catch her.

Normally the human is squashed into one corner and the dog is sprawled out on it's back taking up the rest of the tent:jumping:

We started out carrying her up the ladder. She now knows "night-night" means its time to go to bed. AND now she has learned to climb about 2/3 the way up the ladder. However, I will spot her, and my wife is usually up in the tent ready to receive her. :wings:
As the Sgt. mentioned, we have the same, um, issues getting down. We carry her down the ladder. But, once she wants out... you'd better let her out. :)

HTH.

It's not whether or not you can get the dog up in the tent, it's whether or not you'll have a big enough tent.

I really hope I'm on hand one of these days to witness 63 lbs of black spazz bailing out of Robb's rtt at first light.

We go back and forth on where the dog sleeps, the dog used to always sleep with us but these days she wakes the kid up either by licker her or by walking around going click, click, click with her claws. As of now, if we are in the mog, the dogs sleep in the cab and we close the pass though. If we are in a tent they sleep in the truck, if we are in the Airstream we'll usually let them sleep inside but by the end of the trip, without fail, they are back in the truck.

If I had a rooftop tent, I would probably leave them in the truck. Our big dog doesn't like ladders and she's too heavy/awkward to lift to the rooftop height.

She wont sleep in the truck I'm certain. Vizsla's are known for being like velcro you go they go. So I'll teach her to climb. I hope.

My yellow lab likes to sleep under the jeep, she is an amazingly good dog for me in the woods. I never tie her, even at night and she never runs off. The only down side is that she usually manages to get oil on her back fur.

As a young man my grandfather taught their Giant Schnouzer (sp?) to go up AND down ladders. He backed down. Maybe Ziltch (dog's name) was exceptionally gifted, but I'd think if you started early enough that most could figure it out. Especially if it meant sleeping on the bed vs. not.
