6 months ago i purchased my first land rover, a 2000 discovery II. when i purchased it, it was stock with the exception of a OME 3in lift. I wasn't partially in the market for a land rover and always thought them a money pit (i wasn't far off), until a buddy called me and told me he knew of a friend that needed money same day and was willing to sell his car. So i told they guy i would give him $1,500 for his disco II. i really had no idea the value.
In my head it was a good running car and why not buy it so you have something to drive on the raining days (i ride a motorcycle). I had no intention of putting any money into it. then me and the boys went off-roading, and all the sudden i had to have everything. so i bought used bfg at and hit the trails.
well it wasn't long until i broke something, and that first something was the front driveshaft. So when i put it up on my fathers lift, i noticed that the front drive shaft was resting on the cross member ( by a lot!) i also noticed that on both the shaft and the member that there was a good amount of wear.
I figured i had two options; 1: take it off and forget it, or two, fabricate spacers or hack the middle out. i picked hacking.
i didn't get the idea to take pictures until i had the crossmember removed. so these pictures are of the crossmember hacking and installing.
i first gutted the crossmember and used a scrap piece of angle to help support where i had weakened it, then welded it in place.
next i used some more angle for the aft part of the crossmember
then i used a 90 grinder to touch it up
then i sprayed some paint and put it in place.
this is the clearance with the suspension fully flexed.
it is still closer than i like, but i can live with it.
this is the clearance when on flat ground.
I am still very new to this and i wouldn't be surprised if someone else has done this same thing on this site, but if no one has enjoy.
p.s. i am suck at off-roading.
