How many Montero’s came with a rear locker?

Anyone know how many Montero sold in the US came with the rear locker. So in essence how many SR’s (I believe 94-97 came with the locker) and how many Gen 2.5 98-99 came with the Winter Package. I believe 4,000 in 98 and 5,000 in 99 were produced for the US but how many of those came with the locker?

Actually '92 & '93 SR also had a rear locker as an option, but it was a 9" not the 9.5" in the later vehicles.

The data below is the total by year of new Gen 2 & Gen 3 Monteros sold in USA - I do not have data on the trim level splits. And I do not have good data between 1991 & 1994.

2006 1609
2005 2778
2004 5181
2003 8839
2002 19181
2001 24802
2000 21578
1999 5115
1998 4120
1997 6915
1996 12083
1995 17747

For the '94-'96 a close approximation can be made by scanning for the "engine" digit in the VIN. Almost all 3.5s in those years (the DOHC years) had the locker. For the earlier and later years engine size is not a good degerminator as all early trucks had 3.0s and all later trucks had 3.5 SOHC.

Some years had a trim level digit in the VIN, but that alone will not indicate a locker 100% for most years. Lockers were predominately options on higher trims.

That being said, I'm not sure if there is a way to search VINs in bulk to get decent percentages.

where are you thinking you would find a VIN list? I mean, I'm sure there is one somewhere within the government and Mitsubishi, but not sure how easy it would be to find the list out in the public - especially a nearly 30 year old list.

Vin numbers would not tell you either as the digit 6 (3,4,5) build quality did not specify locker or no-locker which was an option. You would need build sheets from the Mfg. Mitsubishi does seem to have some interest in history and the total number of cars is really small, 130k over 12 years, so who knows some geek at the company might have that data?

Yeah, shorter time frame then 12 years. Only interesting data would be from '94 through '99. 2000 and newer didn't get lockers in N.A. and '93 and older got the smaller diffs.
