How much does your trailer weigh?

I am curious to find out how much your trailers weigh. We are working on a scout trailer for our troop, and I think it is going to come in a bit heavy. I don't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet, but post up how much yours weighs and I can tell if I am way off or not.

Thanks,

Worst case so far was about 2200lbs. Again, that was worse case. Normally I am running about 1800-1900. It doesn't take long to get up there. I figured if I really skimped and carried lighter gear I might save a couple hundred pounds. I got what I got so I don't have to worry about it much.

1650 dry

Mine is 1650 pounds dry, add water and such and I figure around 1950...

A little heavier than I like, but I was able to remove a HEAVY cap from the truck with the trailer addition...

My '46 Bantam T3-C is set up as a dual purpose scout troop field kitchen (for the adults) and family jeeping expedition trailer. It weighs approximately 600 lbs. empty and 1100-1200 lbs. fully loaded with gear, water, propane and food.

Here are some photos. There are more in the link below my signature.

Under 500 dry, ~800 loaded (estimate). The composite body and top of mine is very light, the frame is my anchor and could easily be redesigned and rebuilt to shave some weight, something I'm actually considering.

Kurt, yours is by far the lightest, but we don't plan on dragging ours where u drag yours to :rally_guys:

We should just be pulling behind some SUV's on fire roads and such. That said, I still want to mount it on 35's, just to make it easy to roll it over those occasional bigger bumps (like up to graveyard flats).

I'm guessing we will come in at about 1200-1500 lbs. Are brakes a must at that weight? Most of the vehicles that will be towing it do not have controllers, so the brakes may not get used all that often.

You can never have enough brakes, especially if you are towing with a short wheel-based vehicle.

Note that in many States you are required by law to have operating brakes if they are fitted to the trailer.

Many States have their brake requirements starting at 1500 lbs.

Thanks, Martyn. I was hoping you'd chime in here. How much do the AT trailers weigh? I have a packet coming from the DMV with the local regulations and such. If it were mine I would put brakes on no question, but the scouts have a very limited budget. We may see if we can get the axle donated or at a significantly reduced price for the Troop.

I would guess a full loaded Horizon would some in at 1800 lbs, and a full loaded Chaser around 1500 lbs.

How much leway should you have in the amount of weight you axles can hold? I guess what i'm trying to say is if the loaded weight of a trailer is 2000 lbs. should you use a 3500 lbs. axle?

For off-road use there is considerable difference between the size of the bearings used for 2000 lb axles and 3500 lb axles. If at all in doubt go with the larger 3500 lb.

A good rule of thumb for axles and suspension is to allow for a 25% safety margin. So if your axle is the lowest rated component at 3500 lbs the most you want your trailer to weigh fully laden is 2625 lbs
