Hundy question

I am the current proud owner of '97 Anniversary Edition 80 series LC. It is my daily driver, hunting/fishing rig and family adventure vehicle. I love it, and it still has a lot of life, but am starting to think that maybe I don't want to keep putting miles on it as my DD.

Thinking of getting an older Hundy to replace it as my DD. Why something so big? Because I have three kids in car seats. Try fitting that in your Prius.

Here's the question: Did Toyota stop offering lockers on the 100 series at some point? I've seem some earlier 100s with them, but I don't know that I've seen them on "newer" vehicles.

Thanks for your input.

'98 - '99 had rear locker. '00+ came with ATRAC (traction control via the brakes). Some would argue the best combo is ATRAC and ARB airlockers. They will work together if for example you have the rear locked and the front open, ATRAC will still work on the front end. I personally don't have any experience with ARBs. But I do have two kids in car seats and 2 dogs. That makes even the 100 feel small.

Thanks, Chuck. Yup, three kids in car seats and a dog that makes the travels with us sometimes. The minivan actually works best for most of our road tripping, but as the kids get a little older and we do more camping/back country stuff, a 4wd rig for the occasion would be nice.

'98 - '99 had rear locker OPTION.
Slight correction in red. And the US Market LX's never had the locker option. Personally, I'd prefer ATRAC over rear locker only. But I'd prefer a 98-99 with F&R ARB lockers over ATRAC. ATRAC plus lockers is, of course, the best of both worlds.

Another thing to consider is that 00+ came with VSC, which brought at least some comfort as my wife sometimes drives it. For what you're looking for, I'd think 00+ would be a no-brainer. Even a slightly bigger Sequoia might be worth consideration.

I'll add that the 98-99's had a two pinion front differential that is a known weak point. Based off what I saw with my 98 I would either shoot for the 2000+ model or plan on swapping in an ARB into the earlier model. Even for a daily driver I think the transition from an ice patch to dry pavement would be enough to wipe one out. Maybe I worry too much but it would be worth looking into

I just like that none of you guys are telling me that I don't really need another Land Cruiser. Thanks so much for the input.

Good catch Hoser. I forget after being around awhile that details like that are not common knowledge.

My next mod will hopefully be owning 2 Cruisers at once. I haven't managed that yet.

I also wouldn't over look the upgrade to 5spd tranny in '03 if its in your price range. I think it's a good improvement, you just have to put up with the NAV then.

I hear you on that. I get tempted, but them I remind myself that I really like Land Cruisers. And they usually work.

I'm having the same problem. Waiting to see what the LR5 is going to look like also. I'm not getting rid of the 100 though, just eventually making an addition to the fleet.
