Most people that go with a monochrome paint scheme just pull the plastic cladding panels off. In fact, lots of people just pull them off even if they aren't going to paint....

I don't know if you want to go this route, but I did "Monstaliner" on my whole Monty and I have been really pleased with it, it has held up very well for several years and is tough as nails. You apply it with a paint roller. It's easy and looks great.

I used bed liner on mine. It was a product out of Canada that came in an aerosol can. It came out great and lasted a few years before going gray.
I used Monstaliner on the rocker panels of my kid's '86 Toyota 4x4 p/u and it came out great (sprayed, not rolled).

I removed the plastics from my old Gen3 Montero and painted lower section with Monstaliner. Very happy with it. Removing plastics is a ton of work. Had to weld all the holes in the body and fill. Not for the average type person. However, would definitely recommend Monstaliner. Painted my entire Tacoma with it.

My Monstaliner has been on for at least three years now, maybe four, and it still looks great. Stuff is tough too! I slid into a metal post in the snow, and it went all the way down the rear bumper (like 2-3 feet of sliding against the post). The Monstaliner took the red paint off the post, but didn't chip or scratch at all.

Maybe its just me, but I think gen3's look weird without cladding. The body is fine if you patch the holes, but the fenders have that awkward line around the wheelwells where the flares used would sit. I would consider monstalining the plastic; rock sliders will prevent the body cladding from getting smashed, and unless you are rock crawling, which isn't' the forte of the gen3 anyway, your fenders should be fine; the monstaliner will make the plastics a little more resilient to hits.

Plaati dip them. It's cheap, easy to repair, and isn't permanent.
Finally got around to painting it...wife and i did it as a project together and think it came out really well..used rustoleum painters touch with the primer mixed in it...cleaned it all with a steel wool brush real well prior to spraying..looks way better in my opinion.
