Interesting indeed. I don't like the 200 series all that much but for me, the iconic LCs were the early ones from the 70's that I saw all over when I lived in Placerville, CA. I liked the 80 series but ended up with the compromise 100 series when I bought mine in 2009. It's all the vehicle I ever wanted for the type of off-roading I do, the winter driving I do, and the family comfort vehicle we wanted. What they've become since, I haven't followed as I thought they were ugly, over equipped, and way too expensive. But all the reviews I've read of the 200 and videos I've seen makes me think it's a pretty damn fine off-road vehicle in spite of that author's gripes.

I'd love a 60 or 80 or even 100 series. I can do without all the extras and stick with the basics. I have a 2006 Xterra with rear locker and some basic offroad goodies and seems to get the job done. 84k is a lot for something that may never see dirt. You could do a lot of upgrades and still have money in the bank after all said and done lol. I'll never get rid of my Xterra and plan on building it out as far as I can take it. It's more sentimental to me than anything

It really is time for Toyota to get back to rugged basics with the Land Cruiser. Solid axles, front/rear lockers, removable top, manual non-heated/non-cooled seats, get rid of the third row, and shrink the overall size by about 30%. Until then...I'll be keeping the 80!

I'd love to see the cruiser/4runner/hilux go back to some more basic and smaller sizes. But, with the government mandated BS now-it'll never happen. Same thing with the defenders, we're adults we should have the option of buying something without airbags/backup cameras or 20 computers to control everything.

Hey, if somebody has one they don't like cause it's heavy an has too many creature comforts, and wants to donate it to a family of five that loves land cruiser, I'll take it off their hands.

I'm probably comparing apples to oranges but Mercedes still sells the G wagen with all of its outdated suspension and solid axles and people still love it.
It is also still pretty luxurious but they do sell a slightly stripped down professional version for the "workin' man"... or woman.
Of course they don't sell many of them (3616 us sales last year) but its still more than the LC and the G costs more.
It would seem to me that the formula is clear.
Make sure it works off road and make sure they last 300,000 miles so it has all the attributes that made it an icon in the first place.
Give it normal things that normal people use that you can find in a Honda Civic: navigation, back up cam, AC, heat, power windows & locks and so on.
Then drop the price and watch'em fly off the showroom floor.
Of course it is not generally a common practice for any car company to release a new version of anything at a lower price so I guess I wouldn't hold my breath.
I mean they don't have to give them away but I feel like if they could get rid of some of the super cushy items and price them around $65k and they might attract a lot more attention.
That's still more than $20k over the highest priced 4Runner and still in a range that some people with the means can purchase them for what they were meant for.
Then the people that buy the LC for status can still point and laugh at the underlings in their lowly 4runner limited.

Toyota could turn the 76 series into their version of the G-Wagen. Great idea! That WOULD fly off the shelves. Even at a $60k price point. It wouldn't necessarily compete with the 4Runner either. Ahh...same ol wishful thinking.

Meh, a far better look at the new 200:
http://expeditionportal.com/evolution-of-an-icon/

The price isn't that wild and the drastic improvements over the 100 (engine, trans, suspension, etc) make it worth ever penny. I own or have owned many different Land Cruisers from 4x to the 200 and hands down for long distance travel around the glove, the 200 is right up there and one could make some seriously compelling arguments that it is better than the 76/78/79.

My thoughts on the 100 vs 200:
