International Health Insurance

OK, our rig is ready and in location for a multi-year adventure starting April.

Just changed our address to a mail forward service and the first letter we received is from our health insurance company, dropping us.....

We explained that it was a mailing service and that our physical address is the same, they took us back on. But, it begs the question, when we are overseas and they are here, we really don't have much coverage. Seems most insurance companies are geared to employers and their needs rather than individuals.

I have heard of international health insurance, but don't know a thing about it other than what I read on websites. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience?

We have used World Nomad Insurance and they have been great. You can buy insurance for as long as you want and extend it when your overseas. It's valid anytime you are more than 100 or 200 miles away from your permanent residence.

Thanks Martyn, looks really good.

I'm trying to get my head around how our healthcare system works or in many cases doesn't work. If you travel much, standard health care really doesn't cover you well until you get back to your home area. It looks like your recommendation covers the gap.

I was sailing last year in Florida and had a funny shadow in my right eye. Went to a specialist in Tampa and was diagnosed with a torn retina. I could fly back to California to have Kaiser take care of it, but I was able to cut a deal with the doctor to repair it that afternoon for less than the cost of the flight home. I realized that even though I have what is considered great health insurance, really doesn't cut it if you are going long.

This spring we are heading off to Europe to continue voyaging again. I want to explore the river and canal systems in depth. My wife wants to moor in Paris and launch a different type of expedition. Yes, a little disconnect but it should be interesting.
