Folks at iMore, an Apple-centric blog, used an iPad Mini as a camera for their interviews during the recent CES meeting. The results were more than satisfactory.
iMore used the Vizzywig app, $30 from i4software. http://vizzywig.com/
The article says it's like an integration of the iPad Camera app and the iMovie app. Vizzywig allows moving and cropping the video, making transitions, and composing and adding titles, in the same app as the video capture. iMore found this adds convenience and saves time, compared to using separate apps for these functions.
A $69 iOgrapher case secures the iPad Mini, and adds mounting points for external mics, lights, and accessory lenses. Read about the product on Facebook, which has links to reviews and user projects https://www.facebook.com/Iographer
iOgrapher began as a Kickstarter project
