In anticipation of the announcement of the next iPhone on Sept 12, several retail outlets have dropped the price of the current top of the line, the iPhone 4S. Starting Sunday Aug 26, Walmart, Radio Shack, and Target Mobile stores will discount the 4S by $75 when you sign up for a 2 year contract with a cell phone carrier. The 16GB iPhone 4S will cost $125, the 32 GB 4S will cost $225, and the 64 GB model will cost $325.

When the iPhone 4S was introduced, Apple moved the iPhone 4 down to $99, and offered it only as an 8 GB model. The iPhone 3GS, which lacks the "retina" display and has a slower processor, was offered by several carriers for just $1 with contract.

This time around, the new iPhone will probably have a larger screen, and will offer faster data service using LTE radio technology. It's anyone's guess if the new iPhone will hold the line on pricing (usually $200 for 16GB, $300 for 32GB, and $400 for 64 GB, with contract), or be offered for somewhat higher prices.
