Is there a 1995 Safari Edition YJ ?

I am looking to buy a used jeep for deeper offroad trips. I have found a 1995 YJ. It has SAFARI on the side. The owner thinks the differance in this model is a larger floor space. Anyone have any information on this model or is it just decals??

all YJs had the same tub...so i'm not sure how there would be different floor space. like the post above mentioned, does it say sahara maybe? i do not believe there was ever a "safari" trim offered on the YJ

Automotive ADHD is fun!
Sahara = top of the line
Rio Grande = stripped out cheapo
Safari = someone bought a decal

I'm just throwing my $.02 out here, but do yourself a favor and run away from the YJ please. You can pick up a TJ for just a little more and will be a 100 times more happy with it than you will with a YJ. Trust me you won't regret it. My dad has had a YJ for 8 years now that he dropped a 350 in and has never stopped moaning and groaning about how he should have listened and bought a TJ when all three of his sons were instead of his "bucket of a Jeep" that he did buy. I can assure you that everyone else will agree. The only way to make a YJ anywhere as close and as capable and as functional as a TJ is to completely strip the YJ to to just the tub and throw in aftermarket evrything.

I'll step off my soapbox now and apologize for my ranting.

Take care and good luck!

I've seen a few impressive YJ but in general I have to agree, find a 1997 or newer with the 4.0L I6. If it has a 4 banger in it, walk away without asking a single question.

And to the original question:

Trim Levels

North American YJ/Wrangler were available in the following standard trims.

* Base (also referred to as "S" & "SE" at different points in the model run; first few years the back seat and rear bumperettes were optional, some years the 6cyl engine was an option, other years only the 4cyl was available in the "Base" model)
* Laredo (Chrome grille, bumpers, and trim, hard top and hard full doors, tinted windows, faux leather interior, body color fender flares and alloy wheels)
* Islander (which included "Sunset" Islander graphics and body colored wheel flares)
* Sport (which featured "sport" graphics and, beginning in 1991, a 4.0 L 242 CID inline-6 cylinder engine)
* Sahara (which came standard with most available options, including body color fender flares and alloy wheels, also included with the Sahara edition are special green trail-cloth seats with storage pockets, interior door panels with pockets, front bumper mounted fog lamps, and plastic ends on the front bumper)
* Renegade (which ran until 1994, and featured a similar option package as Sahara, but added premium wheels, deluxe interior group as well as oversized "Renegade" wheel flares and body cladding)
* Rio Grande (Available in champagne gold, moss green and white, with a Pueblo themed interior trim package, this trim was only available in 1995 and was added to spice up the base model Wrangler 'S' hence this trim was only available with the 4-cylinder models)

I can assure you that everyone else will agree.

I don't know nearly enough about his potential YJ purchase or your father's previous purchase to agree with anything in your statement.

A 4.0 YJ is a wonderful platform and easy to mod. The TJ is a more modern vehicle and generally smoother riding in stock form but I would not dismiss one for the other without significantly more information.

I've owned YJs and TJs past and present. 4.0s, 2.5s and 5.0s. Just no way to blanket statement like that. I'd buy another 91+ YJ with a 4.0 and 5 speed without regret.

Agree.

TJ versus YJ doesn't matter if you plan to cut all the stock stuff off anyway. It's a function of your end goal.

I prefer the interior and the front clip of the YJ. As far as suspension is concerned, regardless that will be changed to a long arm setup so it is kinda irrelevant to my purposes.

One caveat I will add, if you do buy a YJ ensure it is a EFI 4.0. Anything else is a PITA.

I have a 1994 YJ. Yes I could have bought a TJ for quite a bit more, but $2000 for a running Jeep was too good deal to pass up.

Anywhoo, I am partial to the YJ's over TJ's for many reasons.

Number 1 being simplicity. Cant get much more basic than leaf springs and they only have one ECU for the engine. Dont even get me started on the electronics for a TJ.

91-95 4.0, add 2 inch "Heavy duty" springs from JC Whitney, new shocks and 31x10.5 MTs and you'd have a really nice explorer. I like the look if the 87-90 fast back rollbars better

Fail! complete blanket statement

Because your family had a bad experience on a YJ doesn't mean the entire YJ line is bad. By this way of thinking CJ's would be even worse.

TJ's have way more electronics = more stuff that can go wrong

I can't agree here either without more info. I picked up this 2001 TJ for a steal because the mods didn't mean anything to most buyers. I think many dismissed it precisely because of the 4 banger and body damage.

I got a 73K mile Jeep with brand new BFG 33s, 9" rear with CHP 9, front Currie HP D44 ARBs front and rear, SYE, spray on bed liner throughout, Full roll cage and an RE 3.5 Superflex lift.

I asked the questions and bought a tough Jeep for the cost of the front axle. That said, I think the 4 cylinder is adequate at best. Gets 18 mpg around town but I am in the process of swapping in a 4.0.

Still a great deal for me because I actually LIKE working on them.:coffeedrink:

I was thinking about this and I actually do remember a Safari model, but didn't think they went as recent as '95 -- I remember it being a late 80s or really early 90s thing. If memory serves, BKCowGod is mostly right but it was the dealer who applied the decals. It was a regional special that was the base model with a special paint job (light tan/off white maybe) and tan vinyl seats. Great big orange palm tree "safari" sticker on the right rear quarter panel. There were a number of them running around Colorado at one point. Kind of similar to the "Rocky Mountain Edition" Nissans.

If it had more floor space it is just because someone took the back seat out.

Yes their was a safari edition Yj I don't remember the years, they where white with tan seats, tan soft top and came with all terrains. Some dealers put the Mopar roof rack on them as well.
CJ, YJ, TJ, XJ, MJ they all have their own problems. You need to decide what headache do you want. The thing I do like about YJs is they are cheaper then CJs and then you can put the CJ front on them.
