Is this a good deal? Used bike?

Greetings Gentlemen,
I have been out of the Mtn bike world for about ten years and am looking at picking up a bike. Things have obviously changed and I was wondering if this was a decent deal:

I am 6ft and will look to ride varied terrain--from single track to cruising with the family.

Thanks for any input

Hard to say, but that price sure seems a little steep. At first blush, I would have guessed far less, maybe even sub $750. I sold a similar bike for $750 and felt pretty lucky to get that.

I'd keep looking.

2002 was a long time ago in mtb terms and they don't hold any resale value. I'd expect to have a hard time getting parts if those suspension bits need servicing.

Hit craigslist for an idea of prices.

I am always shocked at the price people expect for their used MTB's. Yes I think that price is high, but people keep putting stuff up for sale at high prices so they must be selling them. Having said that, the instinct is a good bike, and you won't have issues geting replacement parts for that bike. Bearings, shocks and forks are all pretty standard stuff. earlier full suspension designs struggled with non standard mounts and shocks, but by '02 they used pretty much the same components in different configurations.

Thanks for the info.
I am now leaning towards picking up a new HT of some brand.
So many options out there...:REOutShootinghunter

burke,

At 6', look into 29er's, or at least test ride one to see if you like it better. Cyclesmith in downtown SLC has some demo's, I believe. I recently sold my 26" Spec. FSRxc and I'm in search for a rigid/hardtail 29er. I was sold on getting a Gary Fisher, but test rode a steel frame and just loved the feel of it over the aluminum (I initially liked aluminum over steel, but after a couple more test rides, I'm really liking the steel. The first steel bike might have not fit me properly). So now, I'm looking for a steel 29er with or without a front suspension. And I'm really intrigued by the single speeds, so I'll probably go that route.

But like others said, pass on this. Way over-priced.

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
If it helps I have an XL single speed Motobecane 29er fully rigid that I would sell cheap like $250. Actually not that bad at all, good little townie or 29er...

Well thanks for the advice guys. I fell in love with the looks of the gary fisher xcal 29er in white...then I test rode it and kinda felt it was a little "twitchy" as far as the steering was concerned. I ended up riding a bunch of bikes and for once I liked a cheaper model better. I picked up a Haro flightline Comp (20inch frame-- 589.00) so i picked up a cheaper bike then I had budgeted and sent the rest in on my student loan:sombrero:
