Its not a color scheme of Mombasa that I am familiar with, never seen tan/tan from Mombasa or Camping Labs. However this style of tent is in fact badged under several other names as well so it could very likely be the same design and at least a similar construction. Judging on all the styling cues I can see from the pics I would assume its the same, however its the closeups that really tell you, zipper brand and quality, tent material, floor material, mattress, etc.

Fwiw the fly stays are not curved when stowed, they curve when installed like many tent offerings.

Thanks for the info. The color scheme is what has me thrown off as well. There is someone on craigslist selling these and appears to be a dealer. They are going for 500 bucks, might check it out.

Link?

I would worry about the components. All of these tents have undergone some pretty steep changes since they first showed up here in the States under the Mombasa name, then followed Camping Labs and others. Spare parts, zippers, covers, tent material, ladder construction, hinge material, etc.

There are a few quick giveaways that it isn't a Mombasa Outdoors.

Look at the rainfly at the peak of the roof, a Mombasa comes down further.
Look at the door flaps, Mombasa has an overlaping door flap with straight zippers. This one appears to use a "cut-in" style door opening.
Also as already note, wrong color scheme.

Ah yes, what is the really origin of the "expedition style" roof top tent? I stand corrected for my poor choice of words :sombrero:

Ah, just messin' with you. I have owned a mombasa too.

I'm not sure who was the originator of this style tent but I am pretty sure it didn't come out of China =)

Agreed.

There was a great thread here on ExPo somewhere that details the history of roof top tents. At one time I was searching around the net and found that they were actually being used here in the States in the 40's/50's but not our typical lightweight units and not on a 4x4 rather the family station wagon.

Hmmm, I think you need to go many levels deeper and farther back than the 40's/50's to find the "first" one, here is an example :sombrero:
