So after my www.atltothearctic.com trip last year on my very well set up BMW GS1200. I decided the Toyota needed some love. I sold the GS. I did an update on my Toyota and started to think about a new bike or at least a replacement bike for the GS.

The KTM 990 ADV is a hard bike to find used. I found only 2 with in distance to look at and ride. I ended up in Charlotte NC last Sat to look at the closest one. A 2008 model. It was well set up. KTM ADV bags, crash bars, heated grips, trip computer handle bar controls, GPS mount, and handle bars risers. It had 10,000 miles on it and was well cared for and had all the original parts. I rode it and after the paper work and thank you's were taken care of it was gased up by BMW/Ducati/Triumph dealer of Charlotte they loaded it on my flat bed.

At first ride it feels a bit lighter than the GS. Not saying it is lighter than the GS but rides lighter.
The handling is awesome.
The front end is different with traditional forks compared to the BMW front end.
We are back to fork dive under heavy breaking. But the suspension is nice and the power is there.
Not as torquey as the GS but the revs are there and the LC8 seems very nice. With EFI and ABS its not that far off from the comforts and equipment the GS had.

Here are some pics. The old GS and the new KTM

We will see after a few thousand more miles. After some long rides I feel like I could compare the pros and cons of both bikes pretty well..

The 990 is an amazing bike. I have a friend who rode BMW bikes for several years. After his BMW dealer decided to close down their store, he made the switch to the 990 adventure. He said he has no clue why he was so faithful to the BMW bike for so long. With the exception of bars, bags and a GPS, the bike was stock. -Indiana to Alaska.

Frank, Awesome photos...

After last years Alaska ride on the GS I'm eager to see the differences. I rode my GS a lot of miles on many trips. So the KTM is exciting for me. At first ride it seems a bit more nimble. Should be good off the pavement.

I also realized after outfitting the GS so much that simpler is better. Im going to do very little to the KTM and just ride it and enjoy it. Its a sweet ride.

Thanks for posting up.
