Thinking of getting a single speed road bike, budget is $500 or less (cool with used)

I worked in two different bike shops for over 8 years, but its been about 5 years since I left the last one so I am a little out of the loop. Used to do a ton of XC mountain bike riding, and raced DH for a bit. Never owned a road bike of any sort and am thinking it would be a great way to get back into better shape. A friend of mine said to consider a single speed roadie.

Thought, opinions? Thanks! :victory:

There are many options for single speed road bikes in that price range. I have been riding mine for over 4 years now and I love it! Care to post a pic of the bike you may have selected?

I would reccomend getting steel frame if you can or at least make sure the fork is steel. If you're just wanting to get out for some exercise and not planning on winning any races, a steel frame is a much nicer ride.

Most of these pre-fab'd single speed set-ups also give you the option to choose betwen a fixed rear cog or a freewheel. Try it fixed at least once. It's an addicitive challenge trying to control your speed by resisting against the pedals.

Thinking about one of these....

300 bucks, how can you go wrong!? I think you'll like the drop bars more than the time trial bars. You're going to be standing up alot on a SS roadie and the hoods are a nice place to hook into. The TT bars look like they will stretch you out more.

Why only rear brake? Weird. Anyway, congrats. I was just in Fuquay earlier this month. Hope that snow storm missed you guys.

Its a track bike so generally they have no brakes, the PO put a rear on it and I am going to add a front as well.

The snow storm nailed us! Give me a shout next time you're in the 'quay and we'll have a brew at Aviator.
