BEAST!!

I've been researching diesel swaps for Cherokees for a while now and I've seen people dropping Cumins 4BT in them (but from what I've read that is an extremely hard swap to do). Is your swap something you do only in shop, or can people order the motors and do it themselves?

Do to the degree of skill involved, this is a shop done installation. There are to many variables involved in factory production tolerances.

These are some pictures of mocking up the 617 5 cyl engine. Using Cummins motor mounts adapted to block with aluminum adapters.P1010006.JPGP1010005a.JPG

Yes it uses the stock Mercedes radiator, A/C condensor and compressor and power steering pump like factory.

Looks good so far. So you plan on offering these for sale? How do you plan on getting around the fact that a diesel conversion is technically illegal in the US?

I don't think diesel conversions are illegal on there own. I think as long as you follow your states guidelines and use an EPA approved engine from a US spec vehicle the same age or newer it is allowed.

Not that I agree with it, but what I have read is if the model wasn't available with a diesel option , a gas to diesel swap is not allowed by the EPA no matter what state you live in. Earlier Cherokees were available with a diesel, but I believe the law is model year specific. The EPA has put enforcement of individuals in the states hands and most wouldn't have to worry. Sorry, I don't want to side track this thread and shouldn't have mentioned it. I'd love to put a diesel in one of my Eagles, but I may move back to Colorado one day where there is emissions testing and didn't want to have to worry about selling it.

From my understanding, the usage of that particular motor fits into the second part of your statement. "or if there is a reasonable basis for knowing that emissions are not adversely affected as described in Memo 1A"

in the Series of vehicles from the 89 to 2004 (I believe when the powertech 6 was discontinued) the the i5 he's using actually produced less emissions.

AEV does hemi v8 conversions for the wrangler; that certainly never came with the vehicle, in any year.

The issue is trying to deal with OBD2 for most of the states with plug in OBD2 sensors. Pre 1996 vehicles did not have obd2, and thereby do not have to deal with obd2 checks for registration.

Do you anticipate any issues with the exhaust exiting from under the leaf spring? It seems to me an epedition type vehicle should have the flexibility to run "enhanced" suspension and it may just be the photo, but it does look as though larger leafs and or shackles may pose a problem......am I incorrect?
