Well I was finally able to get around to so trailer mods on our Kamparoo. I had bought a Lock 'n Roll hitch but the trailer is not setup with a receiver to accept it. No problem, just a little cutting, welding and volia. Since I cutting off the old coupler setup, I got the cutting torch out, figuring it would make it easier. Well it wasn't too bad but I kind of forgot about how much heat transfer when using a cutting torch. Let's just say I let all the magic smoke out of the wiring up front.
Well this made a good excuse to put on the junction box and some rewiring I was planning anyways. I also wanted to fab up a mounting system for my Hi Lift but wanted it to be secure. That was a little of a head scratcher but I found a great solution. I had a locking Masterlock hitch pin, which was 1/2" and that happens to be the opening of the holes in a Hi Lift. See pictures below for what all I have done.
I also did not want safety chains to rattle and drag so I went with a set of coiled safety cables, rated at 5000 lbs. It's nice because they don't hang but can expand as needed. We get to try all this out on the Mojave Road this weekend and am expecting everything to work well. :luxhello:
Old coupling, gone!
Starting the fab work
Okay so I missed a few pictures in between, happens when working
Was quite happy when I found the extra length of the tongue allowed my rock deflector to now clear the hatch on the Cherokee.
Tabs welded for Hi Lift mount
Junction Box and my best friend Chris doing the wiring
Hitch lock securing Hi Lift (sorry for blury pic)
Well that's it for now. Can't wait to try everything out this coming weekend. First time towing a trailer offroad and meeting up with Trail Monkey and his new AT trailer.
