Keeping Water Off Trailer Tarp

The Wizard

Observer
I am not sure if it was on this forum or another trailer forum but I remember reading a thread that referenced a article from PS Magazine on how to build a "ridge pole" so water drains off the tarp. Can anyone direct me to that article/thread?

Re: Keeping water off trailer tarp

Hey Wiz,

i see from your signature that you have an M101CDN2. I had a similar issue when I got my trailer. I followed the instructions from the Yahoo Groups site for the M101CDN2 site (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/M101CDN/). Pls PM me with your e-mail address & I can send you a PDF with a very good CAD drawing.
As far as the tarp goes I picked up a brown canvas tarp from Princess Auto and treated it with Barbour Waterproof Wax. A little time consuming but the wax is doing a great job.

Here are a couple of pics of my trailer with the PVC hoops.

Here are some instructions.

TRAILER TARP SUPPORT

Materials Needed

2 – 10’ x ½” sch 40 PVC 6 – ½” 45 Elbow 6 – ½” Tee

1 - Can of PVC Cement

For an M-416 my cutting dimensions were:

4 – 18” x ½” 3 – 44 ¾” x ½” 6 – 3” x ½”

Tarp in pictures is actually one of Todd Mcrimmon’s Cdn M-101 Tarps. Cutting dimensions will be different for other trailers/tarps. Make adjustments as necessary

Cutting

Cut one 10’ length into:

2 – 44 ¾” 1 – 18” 3 – 3”

Cut other 10’ length into:

1 – 44 ¾” 3 – 18” 3 – 3”

Sand ends of pipe/inside of tee’s and elbows and test fit on trailer

To get the angles right I cemented the pieces one at a time while support was on the trailer

Tarp support and tarp stayed on with no problems at 70MPH for a 13 mile test trip on Interstate. Arch in support adds cargo room and sheds water without pooling.

Credit for design of this support goes to several others on the web. I took the best parts of their several plans for this one.

I hope all goes well.

Simple and easy solution.

Use conduit and fab this one up.

Easy to use and removable for hauling

If you have a tailgate use the PVC pipe method
