1977 Land Rover Forward Control 101, 4x4 British Military Ambulance
One of the rarest and most interesting Land Rovers of all time.
Only around 2000 of these vehicles were made originally, this one has only 24k miles on the odometer!
The 101” wheelbase gives an incredibly nimble turning radius, with minimal overhangs front and rear.
The ambulance body, built by Marshall of Cambridge, is complete with adjustable stretchers, air compressor system and fresh air delivery to rear box area.
Although the Forward Control is rare, it uses many parts common to the Series 111 and Range Rover vehicles of the time.
Details:
-Left hand drive, USA/European spec
-3.5L Rover v8, dual Stromberg carburetors (same as early Range Rover)
-4 speed LT-95 manual transmission/transfer case, full time AWD with locking center diff for hi-lo range 4wd
-heavy duty axles, six bolt lug pattern, parabolic type leaf springs, with one ton capacity rating on suspension.
-super low gearing, can climb anything, but higher gear sets are available for longer distance driving
-British Historic Vehicle registered, few records from military use, but has been to Kuwait. Has been shipped more than driven, thus the incredibly low miles.
-full legal import, clean Utah title and USA vin#
-frame and body in great rust-free condition, with about twelve layers of brush-painted non infrared reflective military paint. Passenger upper door frame is only rusty spot, and these door tops are the same as Series II & III 109s and 88s
-original repair manual and parts catalog come with the vehicle
The Bad:
-brake master cylinder just blew out, (new parts on the way)
-noisy water pump, needs replaced, not leaking but time to fix (again standard Land Rover part)
-carburetors need gasket kit and tuning by someone more savvy than me
-clutch master cylinder slight leak
-needs alot of care and attention to get it running its best. The engine fires right up, but needs some love, sounds like new exhaust gaskets etc...
-she will need to be put on a trailer to transport anywhere other than the local Moab, Utah area.
Basically I bought this rig to convert into the ultimate expedition overland camper. The potential is amazing. These rigs have been turned into wonderful campers all over the world, from the UK & Europe to Australia & Southern Africa, and have been to some of the remotest corners of the globe. I dream of putting in a custom pop-top etc etc. See the last few of the attached photos for some cool examples of other rigs...
Personally I would swap the Rover gas V8 for a more modern diesel or injected V8 for better fuel economy. It is also quite common to convert these engines to EFI fuel injection using Range Rover/Discovery parts that bolt right on or several aftermarket kits that are available.
Then again, if your thing is collectible, vintage vehicles this would be a very complete candidate for a stock restoration, with all parts needed still available through many Land Rover parts outlets, as well as the 101 club’s online shop.
The Land Rover Forward Control is a ************ expedition vehicle that goes head to head with any Land Cruiser, Pinzgauer, Unimog, Defender, Volvo C303, Fuso, Iveco, Jeep or Uaz you will see out in the boondocks of the international overlanding world.
Other projects have overwhelmed my plans for this rig, she needs someone excited for the adventure!
Thanks for looking, happy to answer any questions you may have. Cheers,
Mike in Moab.
