LandCruiser Dump Truck

Anyone ever seen anything like this?

Any issues in removing dump mechanism and mounting a pop-up truck camper?

Is there any else going on with this rig's modifications that you think will affect performance?

Thx

Wow, where are you?

That would make a great base for a camper. I would expect that the rear suspension has been upgraded also. How many miles or kilometers?

I would also expect that the dump setup would be an easy item to sell.

Its in Japan (thus the right hand drive). Very lightly used series 70 now 22 years old.

I am considering garaging it in Japan until it turns 25 to import into US with no standards having to be met but I have read that older than 21 years old it doesn't need to meet EPA standards, but needs to meet US safety and bumper standards.

Anyone have any experience with this?

other thought would be whether under the shiny red paint is a work truck that's been ridden hard and put away wet, so to speak. maybe not, sure looks like a nice rig.

that is a great idea if you can make it happen!! I plan to do the same thing with a Nissan Patrol GQ (Y60) in 2012.

Yet...you have time on your side so shopping around will benifit you. I suggest a 3rd party inspection on the truck and a compression test. It is a work bed and a work truck but how hard has it been worked is the question? A lot of Japanese trucks are babied and in super nice condition.

Keep us posted! :)

BTW, yes EPA is 21yrs but DOT is 25yrs so really it is 25yrs. Then it is exempt from both DOT & EPA. Easy to import at that point, done one myself already.

why remove the dump hardware?? build your camper onto it, put storage boxes between the frame rails and youd have easy access. keep nonessential items in the boxes and when you need to get to them just raise the bed up.

used to drive a backhoe rig set up like that. had a 10 wheel dump truck pulling a backhoe on a trailer. all of my tools were kept in boxes between the frame rails under the bed. when i needed to get something i would just raise the bed up and set the jack leg so it wouldnt come down on me. easy access and completely theft proof.

that is a huge cylinder on that dump! Most of them are easy to take all the dump stuff off and convert back to flatdeck. We do it at my shop for other vehicles all the time and we also do alot of converting decks to dump as well. Nice truck.

What site do you look at to find these rigs in Japan?

You must have put that up while I was writing my post. Sounds good.

people I know who have imported under the 25 yr. exemption said it was really straightforward, hardly any hassles at all.

Ive looked at a few aussie models with this conversion and its a bolt on/off.
The dump truck frame sits on 8 chassis mounts
The hydraulics ran off an electrically driven pump.

Is it diesel.?

Its actually a 75 series,either an FJ75 or HJ75 or possibly a BJ75

Care to elaberate on that? All the research I have done (a lot) has led me to the conclusion it is not only illegal but you risk losing the truck.

I think he meant that if you are importing a vehicle that is 25 years or older, it is straightforward and without hassles. At least that's the way I read it.

well, the truck does have to actually be 25 yrs. old or older. I know 2 people personally who've done it (a 60's VW van and a 70's SAAB) and heard of dozens of people on the internet doing it.

Also, why are you asking me?

From your website:

We have the resources to find you a specific vehicle to meet your needs and desires. We can locate the truck in the USA or overseas, aid with the import process, arrange shipping, inspect the vehicle and perform light upgrades and service work. Generally the vehicles have to be 25 years or older to be imported into the USA reasonably. If you have dreamed of owning that one of a kind truck please feel free to email us with your information. With a bit of luck we can make your dream a reality! We charge a fee for our locating services but take all the headache out of finding that one of a kind truck. All you have to do is sit back and wait for the vehicle to be delivered to your door!
