LandCruisers create communication network in the outback

In case you missed it there was a great article the other day about a system being tested NOW to use Land Cruisers as the basis for an emergency mesh network in the outback. I love that Toyota is helping to sponsor this, and couldn't think of a better platform for them to use

I don't see any benefit to this over CB/HF radio that everybody already has in Oz.

Instead of relying on each person to pass the message to the next (and have you ever played the game of "telephone"? until someone can broadcast out, the mesh network connects you directly to the outside the first time (provided the mesh extends that far). So more reliable communication and quicker.

It actually looks a bit like an adaptation of Vint Cerf's paper on protocols for interplanetary networks - high latency, intermittent connectivity, store-and-forward methodology. Kinda cool tech and interesting adaptation.
