Laptop shelf

I have a Leer shell on my 2009 Tacoma and would like to fabricate a small shelf for the laptop that would just clip in to the factory bedrails. Would like to be able to move it to any location along the rails also. Any ideas? The shelf itself will be simple enough, its the mounting that gets a bit complicated for me. Ron

Ron,

Is it simply a shelf or are you looking for it to provide some security to the laptop as well? Because if you need security it changes things...

Pete,
It is just a shelf for holding the laptop while I'm in the shell for the night. Won't be secured to it in anyway. Just want it to clip into the rails and be held by the downward pressure of the shelf itself. The Tacoma guys should be familiar with the rails that I'm speaking of. Ron

Ok - starting to get it. I'm slow sometimes

So do you already have the bed rails like pictured here and want a way to secure that shelf to the bed rails?

If you have the rails, why not just grind down a bolt head to rectangular shape and slide it in the track?

If you don't have rails, you can get some factory ones or just install something like this:

Exactly, Pete. I have the rails. I too thought about a bolt head, just the top section needs to catch in the upper part of the rail. I'm thinking tip the shelf up and slip it in place, and you can then slide it anywhere along the rail. The nuts that fit into the slot are very much designed like unistrut nuts, if your familiar with unistrut. Ron

Ron,

I hear what you are saying - but it probably is the cheapest option in the end. Toyota makes two things you might want to look at: Mini Cleats and Mini Tie Downs. Pricey at about $30 (I think - contact TRDparts4u - they are a forum sponsor and give the best price)

I'm a big fan of the components from Ram Mount

You could get the universal tray for the shelf and then choose from about a zillion component choices to secure it to the side rails the way you would like.
