Leatherman Tread - experiences with the tool?

Hi fellow-adventurers :wavey:

Hope this is the right section of this brilliant forum to ask this question...

A couple of days ago I came across the Leatherman Tread tool. Does anybody uses it here and has some experiences with it to share?

Thanks and best regards

I use the Gerber tool myself, but Leatherman has a solid reputation. You will find yourself tinkering with stuff, just because you have a handy tool.

I received one as a gift. Took a while to get used to it, but I like wearing it. Have not used any of the tools on it yet, but it's a great conversation starter.

Can't wait for the watch addition for it.

I've had a Leatherman multitool for 26 years (I got one of the originals) and find it extremely useful.

Leatherman decided they wanted to make something that didn't have a primary blade (there is an edge you can use to cut through packing tape or something) but rather, worn. I'm not sure about having to remove it every time I wanted to use a tool, and think that over time it may just be easier to reach for it in my pocket or belt.

Bottom line - Leatherman makes great products - I think the Tread is clever but not sure I would embrace the form factor of it. Just my $.02

Sounds good. I use a Leatherman Wave tool since approx. 15 years or so... it is just great! So I assume that the Tread is also solid and well manufactured.

@Cabrito: what about the weight wearing it? Did it took a long time to get used to it because of the weight? I usually do not wear a watch, that is why I am asking.

Thanks for all replies so far! Maybe some more will come?!

Leatherman makes pretty decent stuff. I carry a Surge pretty much anytime I have pants on, and it comes in handy all the time. I have no use for the tread; I applaud their effort to do something different but it's just too gimmicky for this guy.

I've had an original Leatherman Super Tool for 20+ years now. If something happened to it I would probably buy a Style for $20. I've never used the blades much (I carry a separate lockblade for that) but having a compact set of good needle nose pliers has been extremely useful over the years, and I've used the various screwdrivers from time to time as well.

Tread = $165
Style = $20

Finally, due to my background as an electronics technician and electrical engineer, I don't wear stuff on my wrists, fingers, or around my neck that conduct electricity.

When I started working sheet metal, the Boss ordered me one. Every guy had one on their belt. It is truly a task saver, someday could be a life saver.
I use it to repair my MIG welder , carry hot welded parts . cut wire, wood, drywall plastics, cloth and anything in between. Screw unscrew. Pry wedge or break something. Now I always carry it when camping or working anywhere.
Yeah it seems expensive and would be if just left in a tool box or glove box somewhere. The trick is to have it on you, at least until you learn how useful it is. Oh yeah I have had to use it to open canned food camping and cut meat.

^ He is talking specifally about the Tread. It's a wrist/bracelet based "multi-tool". I think everyone on here understands how good the folding mult-tools are. I've seen a lot of responses on here about them, and no one seems to be paying attention to the original post.

It's a valid point, but I assume most people think it is a question about a Leatherman tool, not a friggin bracelet. The OP could have been a bit more descriptive and increase the signal-to-noise ratio in the responses. Right now it's kind of like if I were to post "Hey what do you all think of the Jeep Liberty Sport X All-Terrain?" without pointing out that it's a stroller - most people are going to talk about how they like or dislike Jeep vehicles.

Fair point, I was mostly trying to bring the topic back into focus, but I agree, many people probably don't realize what the Tread is. However, if you posted that and I had no idea what it was, I might do a quick search to at least get on the topic.

It did take a few try's to get used to it, but after a while I don't really notice it.

Stylish, no?

Nah, not really a fair point. The OP specifically said Tread. If people start spouting off about pocket tools because A) they didn't bother to pay attention to what they're reading, or B) just plain don't know what they're talking about, that's not the fault of the OP.

I haven't used one. I've got their pocket tools by the handful and love them all, but not sure I'd go for the tread. I think they're trying for the manly fashion accessory and if you're into that have at it. I just don't see the real function in the form, especially for the price, but it wouldn't be the first time I was all wet.

yeah and the origin story really doesn't work for me. He really feels much less naked now because of it? Come on, gimme a break - there's nothing on it that is really that useful / lifesaving.
