Leg-less roof rack awning

this did not get the attention i was hoping for in my Suburban build, so im hoping it will catch more eyes here.

So basis of the awning is very much the roof rack. my version will be on a Suburban, with an 8" tall rack. but im sure it will be easy to adapt to the 2-4" racks that are more common.

The awning. my awning will cover 3 sides of the vehicle. driver, passenger, and rear. the awning cover itself will be "U" shaped. From the side of the rack, on either side of the vehicle, will be two swinging arms. each the length of the rack, in this case 8'. the front pivot will swing out to 90* from the truck. the rear pivot will swing out to 135*. this will happen on both sides. with the arms in place, you deploy the canvas awning cover, lock it in place at the rack and down the arms, then tighten the two 90* arms to each other to tighten the awning.

wolla!

arm design, very rough

i would love some input on tarp to frame attachment. i was thinking eyelets at the rack and arm ends on hooks. then maybe a velcro or hook in loop attachment down the arms.

also, the rear arms will have an internal sliding extension to make it to the corners that will be almost 12'.

also possible would be a canvas or even screen wall to drape the whole way around. which would be nice for winter (canvas) and summer (screen). hmm. i just thought that one up.

the one thing im most in the air about is tying the front most two arms together in a way that can tighten them back to each other, causing the awning to tighten.

please critique and throw some ideas at me! I hope to have the rack built and mounted by winter, and then i will start to fab the swing arms, and maybe get the canvas work done in spring!

thanx

Won't the 135° arm be longer than 8' if you want to keep the outside edge of the awning parrallell to the vehicle? I come up with something closer to 11.3' for the angled arms.
OH- nvm, my bad, reading comprehension ******.

ive been thinking about the extension for the rear arm @ 135*. the framing will probably end up being 1" round. so i figure the extension will be 3/4". my thoughts are to drill a hole at the length it needs and using a quick pin to lock it in. like this. also, i could drill holes for 1/4 inch increments to compensate for stretch in the canvas.

what do you think? i like simple and effective, especially when your in the woods!

also crunching ideas on how to tighten the front arms back. think ratchett strap, but better.

Those arms look quite similar to the ones on my African Outback awning. If you were closer I'd let you look it over. The material attaches to the arms with Velcro and there is an adjustable pole on the outside edge that keeps it taught.

i dont have a need for a RTT, but it would work. have the door aim to the front, set up a ladder over the front doors. mine will actually have the rack all the way back, not forward like the model has. so it would be possible. or put it all the way forward, so it opens forward over the hood, and run a ladder up the front. lots of options. i plan to sleep in the burb.

... will probably end up being 1" round. so i figure the extension will be 3/4"...

If I am understanding correctly, it would be a tube in a tube? Will it make a horrible racket driving down a bumpy trail?

I'm digging the idea and anxious to see how it comes together.

correct, a tube in a tube. in my head, it wont jiggle and make noise. i will have to work with ideas though. first thought ia a 1" round with .120 wall thickness. then use a 3/4 tube to extend, which would fit good i hope. maybe grind a slot down the length of the 3/4 to allow a lube cavity.

or, i use a 1 1/4" outer tube, with a 3/4 inner tube, and one of these on the end http://www.mcmaster.com/#sleeve-bearings/=dw9d2c

then for the sliding end inside the tube, one of these http://www.mcmaster.com/#sleeve-bearings/=dw9ccn

this may be the best alternative. but also more cost.

Here you go.. it is similar to what you have in mind, but there are a lot of little touches that Hannibal adds to make the design work great. I am guessing a google image search would result in quite a few shots.
