here's the long version of the invitation (from my friend Mark) with more details ->

Greetings Friends

You may already know that I’m taking part in the 2008 Plymouth Bamako Challenge, a 4,000 mile car rally from London to Timbuctu, Mali (that's in Africa for the geographically challenged) with the principle aim of helping charitable causes while also having a little on and off-road fun through ancient European capitals, Moroccan Kasbahs and Saharan sand dunes.

You may also know that to spice it up a bit, I’ll be undertaking this offbeat motoring escapade in a shabby-chic 1988 Town Car Limousine, bought in Las Vegas earlier this year and laboriously outfitted over the past 6 months with the finest auto parts one can find at the Oakland Pick N Pull. Our limo is now a dune jumping, camel racing, finely tuned, desert machine - sort of.

For an idea of the terrain we'll be covering check this out.

Fingers crossed. This past week, team LimotoAfrica, drove our big white beauty, aka “Vegas”, from San Francisco to New York and bade her a teary –eyed goodbye as she was put on a ship to England, where we will once again be reunited with her pleathery luxury in late December. From there we drive her to Africa to be auctioned off in a group of other vehicles. Cheap used cars for small businesses are actually in short supply in Africa due mostly to arcane import bureaucracies and the poor roads. Limos are unheard of. We think that everyone should get to ride in a limo at least once in their life and so we're taking this limo to Africa, and getting a little adventure to boot.

Just kidding about that last youtube clip, these are real though.

In addition to the auction of the limo we're also raising money directly for the World Computer Exchange, an organization that sends surplus computers to schools to many 3rd world countries, in our case high schools in Bamako. You can donate via the website if you're so inclined, credit cards, paypal,…gold bullion works too. We're also looking for things to raffle at our upcoming fundraiser (see below) so if you have a surplus ipod or 56" plasma TV we'll happily take that as well. For those who care to "make it interesting" I'm up for accepting donations per mile traveled - just a reminder that it's over 4,000 miles, so keep that in mind before you get smart and offer $1 per mile - we will track you down....

Thanks for your time, and if you'd like to check on our progress we plan to update the website as we go. We leave December 19th, only a couple of weeks to go. We're pretty excited about this whole adventure charity idea, so please forward this to anyone or any group that you think might be interested.
