First I've seen of them. Just looking at the website:
1. Looks like it would work for the most part.
2. Looks like it might bury into the mud or soft sand more-so than the gold-standard MaxTrax (or the cheaper X-Bull or whatever other similar type you carry - I'll call them "plastic traction boards" since these linktracs are aluminum). If they sink too much or too quickly they won't be effective.
3. Looks bulky to store compared to the plastic traction boards (since you can't store them flat as easily).
4. Not cheap @ $370/pair for the 10" x 45" (about $70 more than a similar sized pair of MaxTrax @ $299/pair & much more expensive than X-Bull @ about $80/pair - not wanting to start a MaxTrax vs X-Bull or Smitybilt debate - just talking expenses for similar type plastic traction boards and devices compared to the Linktrac).
5. They look cool if that's what you're after. Would definitely be a conversation piece.
6. Looks like they'd be a pain to clean if they've been buried in mud (the plastic traction boards seem easier to clean).
7. If they got muddy, how flexible are the flex joints going to be if you're wanting to store it folded? Or if the hinge got kinked from being between a rock and a hard place?
8. Kinda heavy compared to a similar sized plastic traction board (about 10-12" wide by about 45" long). Link above says their 10" x 45" is about 20 pounds. Times two that's 40 pounds for the pair sized similar to a pair of plastic traction boards. On the MaxTrax site, they say their boards weigh 8 lbs each (16 lbs/pair). I think the X-Bulls weigh a little less - couldn't really find a weight I felt confident to post (not that in this situation that's an advantage for the X-Bull compared to the MaxTrax).
9. Looks like it would be more difficult to manually carry the Linktrac to where you need it since it is all flexible (I really don't want to sling a muddy linktrac over my shoulders like shown in the picture in the provided link above). MaxTrax and others have handles on the sides for easy carry. And I wouldn't want to drag the Linktrac.
10. It wouldn't be my first choice even if I had the money; seems like they would be a pain to deal with.
And disclaimer - I've got one pair of X-Bulls on the Jeep's roof rack (in olive green), and another olive green pair on order (I want four total). Haven't used them yet, and don't know when I ever will; I just wanted a set of "plastic traction boards" just-in-case; I have a place to put them, maybe I'm going for "the look", and I don't have a lot of money. Jeep is locked front and rear, and I have a winch. If I had extra money, I'd have bought the MaxTrax. If we take the wife's Subaru up to the snow country (I'm in WA), I can strap them to the roof-rack for just-in-case/peace-of-mind.
