Just came across this rally - London to Cape Town in 29 days.

This is the first rally to stage a timed-drive with the clock ticking every day from Europe to Cape Town without recourse to airlifts or special shipping – the only boats involved are scheduled ferry-services, in a route that aims to keep the wheels turning all the way, clocking up results daily with the successful survivors going home with trophies at the end of a very special rally-adventure.

I'm sure it is very pricey. The organizers are the same ones who put on the Peking to Paris rallies a few years ago. I know a couple who took their 1929 Dodge on the Peking to Paris. 60K USD entry, plus shipping their car back and forth, plus miscellaneous costs, plus a full re-build to put the car right afterwards.

I love the idea of doing this sort of thing...a true "timed rally." 1/2 of me wants to grab a sweet old car and make it awesome and go. Then the other half of me remembers that I have a mortgage, bills, and what the balance of the checking account is I'll stick to overlanding that doesn't have massive entry fees.

Still fun to watch though!

When we were in Ethiopia, we saw about 10-12 cars from the 40s and 50s pass us heading north. They were part of some event as well. I was too busy trying to not hit all of the cows, chicken, goats, sheep, and children all over the road to pay attention to what the stickers on the vehicles said..
