Thank you everyone for the positive responses. We had a lot of fun and learned some good lessons on the inaugural trip of this type. While I wish I could have stuck to my original plan, it just means I have good reason to go back.
It was a fun trip and I can't wait to "plan" my next one. I think someone has said, "you are never lost if you don't care where you end up".

I'm just now seeing your Trip Report--very NICE! I tromp around those areas quite a bit and am fortunate enough to live relatively close to them. My son's in college now, but he and I had a ton of similar adventures when he was young and I love to see dads out doing "unplugged" stuff with their kids. Enjoy every minute of it because it goes by quickly.
