Long pop-up on a short bed

Did that with my current camper and a short box Ranger when I first got the camper. Had to keep the tailgate on, and the tie downs for the rear angled foreward. As for brake lights, unless the ones on the truck are covered, you shouldn't have a problem with people seeing them from behind. Only issue I had was if you got too close you couldn't read the license plate, but from a normal 1 + car length away it could be read easily.
Only thing to watch is the center of Gravity, as the COG has to be over the rear axle or else it can cause understeering due to the rear axle acting like a fulcrum, and the weight balance would be lessened on the front, which the vehicle relies on for steering purposes.
Shouldn't be an issue, just watch the weights and balance points.

what brand of pop-up camper are you looking to put on your truck ?

My camper is 8' on a 6.5' bed. Didn't affect the departure any as the bumper, hitch etc are lower then the tip of the open tailgate.
As far as I can tell if the camper rear is no wider then the bed opening you don't have to worry about lights. I'm thinking of putting as CHMSL on mine though, years ago some girl's excuse for rear ending my old truck was it didn't have one.

I've realized that hanging a camper reduces what I can carry on the back - tire, fuel, bike. I would like to have a swinging gate that covers the rear door and has attachments for these items. So for me adding camper reduces other options.
As far as a hitch extension, I wouldn't have a capacity problem.
Like a lot of people I would prefer a short bed truck when the camper is off.
