Long Range Auto 24 Gallon Aux Tank Install

Installed one on the 80 Saturday. My fat belly is still sore from holding the tank :wings:

Went in pretty dang easy. Great kit from MAF. Comes with everything you need (including rare early model dual filler neck), gauge, wire harness, pump, filter, brackets, etc. Filled both tanks after install.. for like $160.00  The rig sits still a hair higher in the rear with the 864's.. so im stoked.

The pump switch is super smart. Auto dimms at night..has a built in gauge and it knows if there's no fuel in the tank and resets itself, teaches itself. Amazing little switch.. has a circuit board attached to it.

Gonna go weigh the rig at lunch fully loaded.

Slick! If you don't mind me asking, what does that kit run? Are you still planning on running the NATO cans up top now?

The kit went up $100.00. It's now $914.00? + freight (i will call'd mine) I think something like that.. i tried to forget as fast as possible how much i paid lol

I'm still going to run at least 3 NATO cans up top.. after using the super siphon.. it's faster to transfer fuel from them , than the aux transfer pump!!! lol They'll be used for emergency fuel.

I like the new switch and integrated gauge. Perhpas they would sell be one and I can retrofit one to my rig.

Im trying to locate the company online to see if you can order just the switch. The switch wasn't made by the tank manufacturer.

Just got back from the scale.

Rig is weighing in at 6,840 lbs

That's with a few gallons out of the main tank (drove 30 miles on the fresh tank at 8lbs a gallon), no camping gear (pellows, sleeping bags, clothes, bbq, table, chairs, etc), no passengers (my fat butt at nearly 240 and Yosh), no c02 (yes it's heavy) and no fuel/water or firewood on the rack.

All in all i would say we are around 7400-7500 fully loaded out in the field now.

Here's stock specs:

Curb Weight 4,760 lbs.
Gross Vehicle Weight 6,525 lbs.

SCARY.

Did you get the last one? Or are they now in stock? I've been trying to get one for months and have been in touch with them, but haven't heard anything lately.

Since they didn't have any and I haven't bought one, I'm back on the fence, just because of the high expense. Thanks for sharing your install experience.

Something about a customer having one on hold for 5 months now or something... and never coming up with payment.. so i got really lucky. I also harassed them once a day.. so they probably got tired of hearing from me.

They just got a ton of new tanks in a container, but none of them are 80 series tanks.

That's probably a good thing for me. I've already spent too much on this project already, but over time, I'm sure a tank is in my future. Nice pics by the way. Any comments about the install or any problems you encountered? Sounds like it was pretty straightforward. I always thought that particular tank was the ideal set up, with just the right number of gallons, basically doubling the stock range, and the included duel filler and simple switch/gauge combination.

WOW!!! Do you really weigh in at 7500lb!!!! Any adverse affects on the suspension/frame/etc, being some 1000lbs over gross weight? What a testiment to Toyota engineering. I imagine, it must be slower than stock going up hills. :cow: :) I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'm already at 6000lbs and I haven't got the sliders, rear bumper, roof rack, tent, yet. :)

Nice set up. I'm hoping to eventually get there.

The only thing i can say about the install that i didn't like was the directions! The diagram for the plumbing was wrong!!!! They would have had us hooking up the transfer hose to the wrong port! Thank god we had a flash light and removed the sending unit before we began! The pickup for the pump was on the opposite side!

Other than that.. it was a piece of cake. Just be careful when you cut your original filler neck. Don't make sparks! That was kind of nerve racking!

As far as the rig being heavy.. it drives like a caddy. So nice. It sways a little more than i'd like. It's kind of like a freight train. Takes forever to get going and it's hard to stop.. but on the open road once its up to speed it does just fine.

Thanks for the compliments.

Schorr Metals in Placentia CA. They're right down the street from my work. They have a certified truck scale outfront and will weigh my rig for $3.00. $10.00 if i want a certified receipt.
