Long trip question...

I am going on a long trip in April. I'll be riding my '82 GL1100 from Prescott, Az up to West Linn, Or to see my elderly parents.

I won't be riding two-up and I won't be camping so my luggage needs are handled by my Pelican 1620. My question is....How should I pack this onto the bike?

Or like this...

I may not need the extra two gallons of gas as the 'Wing has a 5 gallon capacity and gets about 37 mpgs.

Thanks for taking a look and letting me tap into your knowledge.

The straps you see in the last picture are Andys Strapz from Austrailia. I did alot of looking before I decided to buy them. The elastic is very strong and the velcro is too. I've heard no-one complain about them or how they work, Have you heard otherwise?

Oh yeah...the route!

AZ 89a from home to Prescott AZ 89 north to I-40 I-40 west to Barstow, Ca Hwy 58 west to Bakersfield, stay with a friend the first night.

From Bakersfield, North on 99 to Sacramento then I-5 north to Redding (or Shasta), stay in a hotel.

From Redding continue north on I-5 to West Linn, Or.

I haven't thought about the trip home yet :Wow1:

Having had many long days on a motorcycle, I would put it behind you as a back rest. Agree that you probably won't need the gas can.

A couple of questions..

1. How much weight will you be carrying in that huge case? 2. Can you go with something smaller?

I'd ditch the gas can if I were you.

I like Rok Straps. Easy to work with and hold firmly in place.

The back support idea is a good one so long as the Pelican case doesn't force you too far forward on the seat.

Have a safe and fun trip!

I kinda thought I was doing good limiting myself to just one suitcase........:Wow1: That Pelican isn't very light-weight but it is waterproof and paid for.

I was just in the garage looking and I think I might be able to remount the back rest forward to the upper shock bolts. Maybe Perhaps

Do you remember taking in two very tired travelers after our 3 month trip to Panama and back? Well, if you wanted to stop in Bend OR on the way up or back, WE'D LOVE TO RETURN THE HOSPITALITY.

From having driven all the No-So ways many times, I would offer that route 395 might be a hell of a lot more fun to ride on a bike than I-5! And that would bring you right thru our burg. Take a look at the map, and let us know.

Whether you come thru our way or not, safe travels and our best to Carrie.

Rex,

i would put the pelican like you have it on the first picture, then get a small duffel bag/backpack and take some stuff out of the pelican to it make less heavy and add your rain gear, extra bike clothes and bungee that to the back seat as a back support. i would ditch the gas can, not needed at all.

I would take the offer to cruise the 395 instead of I5 also, much better.

John,

Thank you for your kind offer. I think I'll likely swing by on the way home rather than on the way north. I'll be in touch by PM for local conact info. Clark has offered me the loan of his Wolfman duffle so I think I'll give that a try. I'm getting excited for this trip, It'll be a first for me.

Rex,

One note about the throttle lock: If you are getting sleepy at all stop using it until you stop for a break. The constant rpms make you more tired, and if you do doze off it would be better for the bike to begin slowing down a bit (due to your wrist relaxing) which might wake you up a bit.

Of course our natural response to being sleepy is to set the cruise and relax, but it can actually be much worse if you do that. DAMHIK...

My opinion.

Ditch the gas can. Not needed. I know it looks cool, but it could be a liability.

Pelican:
If you do take it I like the rear rack location for a few reasons.
It's a stable platform to make it easier to secure.
It won't dig into your seat and possibly damage it.
Pelicans look cool no doubt about it, but they are heavy (not that you need to worry about weight on that big bike). I'll also give another plus for the pelican that it's waterproof and secure, but they are HEAVY.

That strap you are using worries me because of the velcro. That might be fine for some applications, but make sure that it's not going to fail when you go over a big bump or lots of vibrations due to road conditions. I used to be the king of the bungee to secure stuff to my bike and never did have a failure, but I would push, and tug, and shake my load when I overloaded my bike for trips when I used them. I suggest you do the same with that strap to try and simulate road conditions.

Have a good trip and don't get bored on I-5. It's a real grind. I know because used to bomb from SF to LA on my bike when I dated a girl down there years ago.
