In this vintage people were still figuring out the things that worked, and what worked well. There weren't perceived notions of what worked and what didn't work, so there was still a lot of experimenting going on. Tires were unreliable so the idea may have been that you only use one to reduce cost of the eventual replacement (pure speculation).
There is a Bugatti restoration shop in Colorado, and I was surprised that Bugatti chose to pressurize the fuel tank with a hand operated pump to push the fuel toward the engine instead of using an engine driven fuel pump to draw the fuel toward the engine, not the only example of Bugatti different thinking, but shows the "pioneering" aspect of early automotive ideas.
I would be worried exiting some gas stations with that thing attached so close to my car/truck, the bodies might hit at the top!
