As the title states I am looking to buy an FJ 60 and I need some advice. I have been around jeeps my whole life and have decided to venture out of the nest. It wasn't hard for me too fall in love with the 60. They are so beautiful.

Did the 60 ever come with an auto and are they realiable?

Are certain years better?

How many miles can I expect out of the engine?

Is it possible to fit a third row?

What should I look out for as far as "stay away from this one"?

Any info would be much appriciated. I am getting my 2001 Jeep Cherokee ready to sell which will decide how much I can spend. I would like to get $6000 for it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

1988-1990 FJ62 has the A440 transmission. As with any transmission, it's going to be about the preventative maintenance and abuse. Our 1988 has 210+k miles on it. It still works just fine. The 1988-1990 FJ62 will also be fuel injected. Earlier years have a carburetor.

Are certain years better?
Not really The FJ62 has sway bars, so they do handle differently. I think there are some slight suspension differences throughout the 6x series, too.

When the first one wears out, we'll know.

Is it possible to fit a third row?
Yes, but not easily. The factory third row was not offered in North America, so you wuold have to find imported parts. Then, the wheel wells are different, so there will be a lot of welding required. Many just mount a Jeep rear seat to gain a little more seating, but the legroom is lacking at best.

Rust is a common find on the rear wheel well lip and the rear quarter panels. The less rust, the better. We have some still here in Arizona that have no rust, but I believe that the rust free original well is running dry.

Since you are in AZ, I would highly suggest checking in with the Copper State Cruisers. Many of us will be happy to help you check out a vehicle, and there is a lot of knowledge there.

Out next "meeting" will be the 16th.

Hope this helps,
Dave

Yep!
Make sure the PO took care of it.

62 had a stronger axel IIRC?

That's about the biggest thing with the 40's, 60/62's/55's or any other Toyota product made prior tpo about 85 or so...RUST!!!

You're always trying to stay ahead of the cancer. Being in Az, you've in a great position. Get near the ocean or salted frozen north, and watch out!

If it help, I have an 89 FJ62. Almost sold it, but can't bring myself to do it. These things grow on you like a wart and it becomes a love hate relationship with PM.

They get crappy fuel economy (1-5 about average. I'm getting 9.5 at present.

The are S L O W...... I mean snails passing you on the highway S L O W......but man, these things if you take care of them, will never let you down!

I'll keep my S L O W.....fuel inefficient...beast thank you.

If I want to go fast....I'll by another VETTE:smiley_drive::coffee:

And you've got so many great places to use one...Go for it.....you'll love 'em!

Technically the 60 never came with an auto, it was the 62 (still a 60 "series" but technically not a 60). IMO the 60 looks better with the round headlights whereas the 62 looks like a lifted Volvo 760 wagon, but some people like that kinda thing - "boxy but safe".

All FJ60's had 4 speed manual transmissions, but 86 & 87 are a "tad" better with the split case that an H55 5 speed transmission can bolt up to on the FJ60. The H55 is an immensly popular conversion. All of the FJ62's had automatic transmissions and the same good split case, and can accept the H55 trans swap as well.
The H55 will do wonderful things that cannot be expressed adequately in words to the FJ62, combining the EFI with the direct drive makes it a very pleasant vehicle to own, we sold our first cruiser (a rust free 90 FJ62) before finding this out and now regret selling it. At the time we couldnt get rid of it fast enough because it was slow. I'm talking slower than SAR Skipper could even begin to express. A Suzuki Samurai running on 2 cylinders & full of sumo wrestlers going uphill into a headwind will still be faster than a 62 with an auto. Early 60's can get the H55 swap as well, but then require a late model t-case added to the cost of the conversion.

Maintained, 300K+

Yes, not easily, and then only suitable for vertically challenged contortionists

Rust - the spots outlined in above posts, and also in the rear inner framerail area, there is a double walled section that gets moisture between them and rust begins, sometimes lots, and the frame can begin to delaminate. If its rusty, but not thin & compromised, you can remove the rivets holding the second layer in that small area and take out the second piece, then wire wheel and treat the area with a product like Extend rust treatment, and finish with several coats of your favorite rust preventative paint. If the frame can be poked through with as screwdriver in this area run away now. While this is typically a rust belt issue, remember that those vehicles can be driven to non rust belt areas and sold there as dolled up rigs that many people never look under as long as they are shiny up top. We have customer this recently happened to because the bright red paint somehow indicated everything must be great, and after the frame swap it wasnt such a great deal!

I'm not sure of the difference, but I had an HJ60 for my 21,000 mile trans Africa trip, with the 4.0 L diesel engine. It never missed beat, and is a truly wonderful vehicle. I think your biggest issue is going to be finding one that hasn't been abused.

There was only one quirk to the engine, and that was its ability to turn engine oil into thick tar in a matter of days..but I have narrowed that down to either extremely sulphurous diesel, or the altitude compensation device. Either way, I didn't suffer this issue in either SA or Namibia, so you should be fine.
