Looking at a '91 Tomorrow...Couple Questions

Got a trade offer for my BMW of a '91 Land Cruiser. Guy says it has the locking rear diff.

142k miles. AC/Heat work. Said a couple of the windows dont go up and down via the drivers control, but do with their individual switches.

Apparently it leaks from the rear diff, what here would leak? Tough fix?

This has the 4 liter I6 correct?

Price/trade value of my car is about 3k.

Looks pretty clean from the pics, the puddle under the rear end is concerning but he says that its been parked in his driveway for a year to get that big of a leak. (he drives it several times per week)

Thoughts?

Looks pretty clean. Not sure on rear dif, leak at seal or one of the plugs would be easy. I don't know the name, but a leak at the drive shaft side might be worse. I did not think Toyota had a rear only locker choice, so it might be aftermarket... ARB? It will be the straight 6, slightly under powered says most folks, but I have never driven the 3FE. BTT

I have a '91 also. Great truck and I expected it to leak but it was my goal to stop all leaks no matter what. I did it and it cost me about a grand in repair bills. I had the work done by someone else, so I'm sure it would have been cheaper if I didn't hire someone else to do the work but I really wanted this truck to be a family hauler and very reliable. The engine is a pig. No way of getting around it but at least they'll last forever, which could be a negative if you hate it (ie no good reason to replace it).
I recommend you figure out what your goals are with this truck and see if its gonna meet them. Btw, I think your paying a bit too much for that truck. For $3000 I think it should be in better condition.

I would look very close at leaks, there seem to be 3, motor, tranny, and rear dif.
I also agree with Homey, $3000 might be a touch high, but tough to trading very equally priced vehicles.

Yeah thinking this may be a pass. Appears to need a lot of work.

If that spot under the rear dif in the picture is the leak, then be cautious!! If it has a locker it would be aftermarket, 93 and newer had the option for front and rear dif locks. $3k seems high, friend found a 93 w dif locks for $4k.

Good luck!

Talked to the owner again. He has only had it a year and doesn't know the history well. Lots of little things wrong.

Skipping this one. Thanks for the info though!

The Trooper I am lined up to get is much nicer.
