Here is my trailer. Its the back /12 of a 87 Jeep GW.

My Jeep is lifted 4" and i want a trailer to make into a camper offroading etc. Any ideas would be welcome.

The problem with a lot of these "older" trailers...is that many times they require 2 times the work and 3 times the cost then if you went out and found a platform ready to go. Then you figure out the mods you really want and have at it...and have something to show for it.

A good way to start is write down a list of "must haves" and wants. That will ultimatly tell you what kind of trailer you want and need.

Good luck

It's a lot easier to start with some fresh steel than to make something work. I'v made trailers wider and longer before and built new ones and new ones turn out better and easier to work with. Pull the jack, rear hinges and the rims off of that one and start fresh. Just my $.02 worth.

Take a look at a fiberglass service or utility bed for a trailer frame. Load a camper shell/topper on top, provide some access rear door and have a light weight cabinet box to carry everything you need for camping as well as separated.

Take a full size contractor style topper (rear access doors) and fab that to a trailer frame with 1/2 walls.

ok so this will become a yard trailer. I will look for a better platform to start from. just trying to use what i have.

I fully understand trying to use what you have and building something on a budget, even though I always blow my budgets. I know you will be more happy with a trailer if you start from fresh steel.

I'm a new member to this board, today as a matter of fact. I too am planning on building an expedition trailer. I found an older, small utility bed in pretty good shape. I plan on fabbing my own frame, buying an axle with Toyota lug pattern to match my FJ Cruiser, and ultimately putting a roof top tent on top of the trailer. I found the utility bed for $200, but had to go about 4 hours to get it. I like the idea of waterproof, lockable compartments.
