Lots-O-Full Frames coming to Photokina?

Endless rumors are circulating right now about Photokina 08, but it looks like it could be a very exciting year for pro-sumers with a new Canon 5D mark II, and the 5D's newest full frame rivals frames from Nikon and Sony. A D700 or D10 whatever Nikon ends up calling it, along with Sony's flagship full frame 25 megapixel monster the A900.

I think I'm going to start selling my DX lenses.

Looks like we won't have to wait for Photokina. Rumor is Nikon is going to be announcing the new full frame D700 tomorrow. 12 MP full frame,
51 point AF, and 5 (8 boosted) FPS, if true holy cow! If these turn out to be the real specs they would make the Nikon D700 far more of a camera than the bare bones full frame segment that the Canon 5D started.

One store already has it listed. here.
Here's an article.

I'm liking the new SB900 flash specs as well.
"range 17-200mm (14mm) on FX. Reacts on DX/FX-effective focal length. Three illumination modes: standard, even, midconcentrated. Firmwareupdate via camera-CF. Overheat-deactivation. Reads and communicates gels to camera for WB. Handling by central turning wheel"

I will welcome the new crop of full frame senors (should the come). I think, however, many nature photographers are going to struggle with giving up that multiplier. I even enjoy it on a 800mm f5.6....

I was suddenly regretting my D300 purchase until I started seeing the price rumors. Well over $3k for the body.

I don't deal in rumors...just in fact. I could tell you about the new FF camera I have in my hands, but I won't.

The D??? that Nikon is announcing is going to be a great camera. Don't hurry and sell your DX lenses yet...unless you do not have a DX camera. I still have my 12-24 for my D2x, but kept my 17-35 for years because of what I knew was coming. One of Nikon's sharpest lenses IMO, and built like they used to be...a tank.

When the next camera hits the streets the talk will be about noise, dynamic range, color accuracy, user programming, upgradability...NOT about MP. The MP hype is way overrated IMO, but that's all consumers relate to, so that's what is pumped by manufacturers.

The next D3 series camera is a gem. You might want to wait for it.

If they turn out to be like the D3 we'd have the option of using the camera in both DX or FX format. Then we'd have the best of both worlds rolled into one camera. Here's to keeping my fingers crossed.

Start saving your money for the next pro body. Street price will be competitive. I have to shut up now.

Really a full frame version of my FM3a would be fine, a DM3a.

You are not the only one clamoring for that type of a digital body. I see it on the horizon.

Oh yeah, I was shutting up. Camera talk is hard to resist.

You lucky.... If it ends with an x I'm jealous, but I don't think I'll have the cash or the need for a camera of that caliber.

All I really want is a fairly simple but robust FF camera, 3 sharp lenses like the newer Nik. 14-24, 24-70, and a 300 or 400mm tele.

If there are certain features you wish to see in Nikon's upcoming lineup, odds are they are already working on it.

I do know that when I started skwawking about some new PC lenses it took several years, but they finally did announce a new line-up to replace some aging designs. I cannot take any credit for it, but just say that so that you can see even the most remote design possibility is probably already in their pipeline.

If you want to make sure your wishes are known, you can write to:

The Summer Olympics are usually a good place to see new cameras. Get out your DVR's and pay attention to the hardware on the sideline. I can guarantee you'll see some D3x's at the olympics. Start to look for some 'non-official' test images from the games. If Nikon makes it's announcement official before the Olympics, then you might even start to see downloadable samples on Nikon's website.

Shutting up now...

Oh yeah...if you *really* want to know what is coming up for Nikon, pay attention to Sony. Especially what patents for chip design Sony is filing. Sony's newest D-camera is pretty sweet. The technology will 'trickle-up' to Nikon...it always does.

It's official!

The new full frame D700.

Nikon UK is pleased to announce the introduction of an all-new FX-format digital SLR: the 12.1 megapixel Nikon D700, designed to allow more photographers to enjoy the acclaimed image quality of the Nikon D3, with its smaller, more portable body.

”The Nikon D3 has taken the action photography industry by storm, motivating many pros to change their brand of choice, and we expect the D700 to continue that trend,” said Robert Cristina, Manager Professional Products and NPS at Nikon Europe. He added: “The D700 excels in the extreme low-light and high-contrast conditions under which today’s cameras are judged and affirms Nikon’s ongoing commitment to meeting tomorrow’s imaging needs.”

D3 DNA
The D700 inherits the superior image quality of the D3 and uses the same core technologies such as the highly-sensitive 12.1 effective megapixel CMOS image sensor. The D700 also features the same innovative EXPEED high-speed image-processing system, 14-bit A/D conversion and 16-bit processing pipeline to provide the detail and smooth gradation necessary for outstanding print enlargement and reproduction.

FX on the move
The D700 is ideal for those seeking a perfectly-balanced DSLR on the move, without compromising durability or environmental resistance to moisture and dust. The D700 incorporates an image sensor cleaning system that uses high frequency vibrations to reduce the accumulation of dust on the image sensor surface. A responsive 5fps is possible with the compact 1500mAh EN-EL3e lithium-ion battery, with up to 8 fps possible by attaching the optional MB-D10 battery pack using the powerful 2500mAh EN-EL4a battery if desired. The practical i-TTL built-in pop up flash with 24mm lens coverage is ideal for discrete flash lighting when a full size Speedlight might be too cumbersome.

Getting the shot right
Despite its attractive price tag, the D700 boasts a comprehensive range of features that include a highly responsive shutter release time lag of just 40ms, the acclaimed accuracy of the 51-point MultiCAM3500 AF system, DX Crop Mode and Live View with contrast-detect AF displayed on the same high-definition 3-inch TFT monitor used on the D3 and D300. One of the most significant advantages of FX format cameras is the viewfinder experience which offers outstanding solid glass pentaprism, 95% coverage and adjustable AF point LED illumination for a bright, uninterrupted view. The D700 also has the ability to display the Virtual Horizon level indicator during Live View mode.

Getting the most from the lenses
The Q610 is designed for the future without ignoring the past. As Nikon celebrates the 75th anniversary of the very first NIKKOR lens, and with well over 40 million sold, intelligent image processing technologies to control peripheral illumination (Vignette) and chromatic aberration enable photographers to rediscover the creative possibilities of their older NIKKOR F mount lenses. For newcomers, the ever-expanding Nikon Total Imaging System provides lenses, Speedlights, Software and accessories for every photographic challenge both now and in the future.

The D700 is supplied with battery EN-EL3e charger and Nikon Software suite.

Middle Income Semi-Redneck
D700 seems pretty cool. In fact, it seems like a camera I could do. I like the round eye piece, seems to indicate that it will be a bigger viewfinder and thus maybe better for manual focusing. That's one thing I did not like about the D100, D70, etc., seemed like I was looking through a P&S compared to my old MF junk. You get spoiled looking through a finder on traditional cameras, bright, easy to focus, etc. How much is this beast gonna cost?

Edit to Add:
This beast will cost $3,000, which is 40% less than the D3.
