LR3/4 Quick Questions

Will the 10 spoke 18" wheels from an LR3 fit on a 2010 LR4 without issue? Also, in the seven pin trailer wiring harness, is one of the wires power that could be used to charge a trailer battery while travelling. Thanks for any and all help.

I can't help with the wheels but we tow our camper (currently traveling 1 year with it) and use the 7 pin harness. Yes it does charge the batteries while towing.

Personally I think 18" wheels and E rated tires are a minimum but then again I run Colorado trails. I have 18" LR3 wheels with 1.25" MotorSport Tech spacers on my 2011 LR4.

The factory wiring to the 7 pin rear connector is very light weight. Say 16 gauge at best? A quick check with BlueSea Circuit Wizard using 12V, 25' wire length (guess on how long the LR4 wire length is) and even just 10a load recommends at least 10awg. At 20a it is 8awg. You can play around with the calculator which will show that 16awg is good for ..... 3a. Yes it will charge the trailer battery but the voltage drop at load will result in a partially charged trailer battery.

My solution was to add a BlueSea SI-ACR Automatic Charging Relay - 12/24V DC 120A in the engine bay, fuse block and 8awg hot and ground run to appropriately sized trailer connector. The ACR automatically combines batteries during charging, isolates batteries when discharging and when starting engines.

Thanks guys. There is a 2010 LR4 for sale locally that I was considering having a look at. I'd want to keep my 18" wheels and Cooper Discoverer AT tires. I have a SurePower 1314 isolator right now in the LR3 for the second battery with #8 wire for the fridge in the rear cargo area but I am considering moving it to the trailer once I get it. Good info, thanks again.

I should add that the 18" LR3 wheels I.D. is nearly an exact fit to the LR4's caliper O.D. with the 1.25" spacers. Don't be surprised that one or more of the LR3 wheels initially slightly rub the caliper from production variences. And if wheel weights are not placed far outside they will be sheered off. Every time a go for a rotate and balance I need to "coach" the tire jockey.

There are 4 ribs that stick up on the front calipers that I ground down a little bit to prevent interference. Initially when I mounted up my the lr3 wheels and spacers the wheels contacted those ribs on the calipers. Once I cleaned them up with a grinder it wasn't a problem.

I haven't installed my Traxxide kit yet but he asked me if I planned to tow a trailer with batteries when I ordered the custom kit. I said yes and he upgraded my harness for another option to connect directly to the truck outside the 7 pin and also equipped it to run from the truck to the trailer for the eventual solar panel install and that way I am charging all batteries on the go, or solar while static. I think the exact point was like you said, the standard 7 pin will never fully charge the trailer battery no matter how long you drive. I experienced that with my old Diesel Excursion and Pace trailer with trailer batteries. I ended up hooking the trickle charger up daily to the trailer when stowed and tied to the generator when on the road.

Great advice on the BlueSea set up cuz I think many people like myself think the battery is getting a good charge with standard wiring on the road only to find out.......not so much!
