So I know i am kind of just screwed but Ill still reach out. today while paddle boarding I had the joy of watching my only key sink to the bottom of town lake in Austin. It is going to take Land Rover a month to cut me a new key, until them I am sans Auto. I got a big magnet today and Im going back to look for it, but when I cant find it are there any other ways to get keys??? I have a DII so I can Program it.

I guess the Rover gods are mad at my Bronco dreams ?

Even if you can program it I doubt you’ll be able to start the vehicle. That sucks. Land Rover’s new activity band makes good sense now.

to add it is a LR3 Key. I can’t believe Land Rover only had one Machine In the country to cut keys. That is Bull!

Years ago, I mistakenly ate at a cafeteria. Also, like a doofus, I put my key on the tray (I hate things in my pockets), when I finished my meal, I tossed the contents into the nearest bin, and stacked the tray.

Four hours later I realized.....

It took weeks to get a new key from England, and then it cost like $300 to get both keys reprogramed. Man, I will never eat at that cafeteria again!

Think you’re SOL with that being your only key.

Mine only came with one, I bought 2 LR3 blanks off Amazon for $15 each. My local locksmith was able to cut the blades to match using the original key, programmed them with the IID tool, both worked and will start the vehicle.

They don’t have the rechargeable batteries inside them so they will go dead and need battery replacement eventually, but they just open up with a screw rather than the glued shut LR Keys.

FWIW the L322 Range Rovers (at least 08) use a much more complex chip inside and I couldn’t get the keys I bought for it to program.

Is this really I thing? I thought dealers had the ability to cut keys - I had my local dealer cut me a replacement D2 key. Don't get me wrong, it's a pain in the ass to find someone at the dealer with the knowledge to operate the key cutting machine, but someone eventually stepped up and did it.

They only have one machine to cut new keys in the country if you lost both keys that come at Purchase. Seams like if you have a key in hand you can get someone local to cut a new one, but if not...

Been on the phone all day with all sorts of people from Rovers North to Land Rover UK to a ton of locksmith seams I am totally SOL. If you only have one key you need to get on getting a second one cut ASAP. Because if you lose both you Originals your in trouble.

I got a Big super Magnetic and I’m going fishing tomorrow to see what I can pull up. Hopefully there's enough metal in an I phone and a Rover key to get stuck.

If you can retrieve it, it'll likely start the car. The immobilizer, from what I can tell, uses a passive induction coil (think NFC in credit cards), though I am not 100% certain. If someone can confirm ro deny, that would be wonderful!

I just had mine submerged this past weekend for a good bit. Started the car straight away, but the circuit board needed to dry out for a few hours for the keyless entry to work again.

Best of luck!

Hope you find it. IIRC, the flip-up key fob of my 2006 RRS (same key as the LR3) was a sealed brick, claimed to be waterproof up to 82 feet. So, unless you cracked it open before to replace the rechargeable battery... How deep is that lake? ;)

@umbertob its around 20 to 30 feet and viability is low. I’m goi g to try to go out at Noon that way I can look down into the water and see if I can make out the Orange Bag it’s in then I will just troll the area Dragging the magnet. It’s really a crap shoot though it’s been two day and Town Lake is really part of the Colorado River (Texas not the bingo one).

If it had a float on it the float could make for a way to snag it with a boat hook, but you have to know where to look. If you find it, get yourself a 2-lb bag of rice on the way home and when you get there, put the rice in a bucket and bury the remote in the middle, and leave it there for a few days. The rice should pull the water out of it.
