I have a significantly different point of view on that. The power of the V6 far exceeds that of any Discovery that proceeded it. It has tremendous torque, and is a much better match to the transmission than the V8. I drove about 70,000 miles in a V6 LR3 in ALL sorts of conditions, and about 10,000 miles in a V8 LR3. Switching back to the V6 after driving the V8 for a few months, I did not miss the V8 at all. It should be noted though, I drive with a heavy foot. The V6 rev's nicely.

My experience with the V6 was in a Ford Explorer and it was a great engine.

The reality of this is questionable, what types of parts do you think you will need, and hope to buy at an auto parts store? Most of the ancillary components are Land Rover specific.

I was thinking like belts, water pump, thermostat - ie regular maintenance type stuff. Plugs/wires etc. You bring up a good point though about LR specific components.
IMO there is no reason to look at a v6. The jag v8 is equally reliable (you don't hear of engine problems with either). The MPG difference is almost nothing. The v8 has more power.
The shift points/match with transmission might be the only thing (I have no experience as I haven't driven a v6), but this sort of goes out the window if you put on bigger tires. I rather have the additional HP to turn the bigger/heavier wheels.

in 2007, I came very close to buying a V6 7pass in white (preferred color) and 6 years later, I think it would have been just fine and 7k in my pocket. Instead, I ended up with a HSE V8 (blue) and 105k later, it is still solid and its service history is well documented! I love it regardless but had I gone for the V6, I believe it would have performed just as well...
I've never met him in person but I highly recommend Nwoods as the LR3 V6 guru.. I've read his posts for years and he has well-documented his LR experience from trips to tires and more. I'm sure he's happy to provide further insight on the V6... Thanks, Nwoods, you helped me learn alot about my LR3....

You are quite welcome! When I first started wheeling the LR3, there was virtually no information out on the net about them. It was my goal to collectively expand the knowledge base so that new owner could benefit from our experiences. Now there's tons of good info, parts, and industry support. Sure wish I still had an LR3..or really, I'd want an LR4 Commercial version with the TDI V6!
