M416 Springs

I have searched around through the forum a bit but have not found what I am looking for. So here we go.

I just recently purchased a M416 and want to get a new axle so my 5x4.5 rims fit it. The springs are also shot. The actually have almost a negative flex in the so I know that I need something newer. I called Redneck Trailer Supply today and got some infor on a replacement axle and new springs.
  • What size axle would you all suggest?
  • What springs are you guy's using as a direct replacement for the M416 spring?

Sorry, I can't shell out the money for the AT replacement kit. Wish I could... The guy at Redneck told me that the largest spring he could order eye to eye without going with a custom kit would be something like 25-26'' eye to eye... the M416 is more like 36''. Anyone have any idea?

Try Jeep WranglerYJ or CJ rear springs. They are 2 1/2" wide and IIRC 36" long. (I have a set laying in my garage I can measure them tonight to get exacts) You may need wider sping mounts on your trailer. I'd use a 3500 lb rear axle 5 on 4.5 and if you want the trac width to match your Jeep 60" wm to wm. (assuming you have a rubi since it's in your name lol)

I just put a set of springs from Saturn Surplus on my trailer. For just $52.00 each it is a good deal.

Thanks so much guy's... and Yes I have a Rubicon... good guess:)

I will probably order a new axle at 60/60 hub to hub.. thanks for the measurement. And get either the CJ-3 springs or the ones off the site listed above... thanks again. I am sure I will have more questions as more issues come up :)

I know its an old post,, but check out the local jeep clubs forums for anybody clearing out pre-75 cj springs. A while back someone had a 3 or 4" lift set of early cj springs for $400 on one of the Jersey jeep club boards. I had a computer meltdown and since I'm bad at backing stuff up,, I lost all my bookmarks..

If you'll go to a heavy truck shop or heavy truck suspension shop, they'll have a catalog of springs by application. If you'll look through the light truck and pass car applications, you'll probably find just what you need. It help to have a friend on the inside, too.

What year front CJ springs would fit a 416?

I'll get measurements when I get home, as I cannot remember which it is, the front or rear springs from an ECJ5 as I believe they are different lengths.

I have a M416 as well to compare to my jeep.

I was able to buy springs individually from jeeperzcreeperz.com IIRC they were $80 and then it was like $25 for shipping.

Axle

the best I went with a 59 inch axle and if I could do it again would get a 57.
I am running 33x12.5 tires.

I am having custom fenders build and with 59 inch axles the fenders will be 16 inches wide

Doing quick measurements it looks like the front springs from a ECJ5 would fit. Mine is a 1966 CJ5 frame under a '46 body. I have lift springs, which are a bit longer then stock and they were measuring just over what the stock M416 ones were.
