Mah new winch (or am I just gonna get in trouble?)

My FG is my daily driver (beats my Tundra mileage handily and is easier to work on) and so I don't really abuse it off road as some do. Originally, I was going to get a Unimog but decided I didn't need that much capability. I just toodle around some forest service roads, cross a few fields, snake around a some trees, maybe hit a few beaches.

I really didn't want to mount a winch on the nose (or tail) and didn't feel a cradle mount was right (at 100+lbs)....I do want to self recover if things aren't too severe and indeed, I've been stuck in a few muddy spots. I was looking around at the Tirfor style winches which range in price from $400-$2000+ when I stumbled across the Wyeth Scott "More Power Puller," rated at 3 tons, comes w/ a block and tackle (6 tons) and 35 feet of 5/16 Amsteel synthetic line that'll pull nearly 14k before it snaps.... At 26lbs, it is even more compact than a Tirfor style winch considering it's self contained whereas you have to store the wire coil separately with the Tirfor, and the cable is proprietary in most cases......Hoping I did alright....Or am I just dreaming and will actually need a 12k winch and only use my hand winch to keep me upright or off a tree....?

Put it this way when are really stuck to the chassis don't ask me to help work that winch as it really a lot of work for not much pull. If it just slick on top of the ground it will get you moved (maybe). A big Tirfor will get a lot more pull.

These are very good pieces of equipment and primarily used in the logging industry. That said, using a hand winch is scary AF. They make all kinda weird noises and you standing there, cranking away like, "Is this thing going to explode, kill me, and send my truck to doom??"

So it will work...but after one use you won't be interested in using it again. Or you are a fearless beast and don't care, in that case these are great.

I have that exact model. It's pretty handy. You'll be amazed how often your buddies will ask to borrow it! Not something I would use if I was expecting to winch on every outing, but good for odd stuff, like hoisting something from a thick tree limb, or pulling from odd directions. I would pair it with a considerable amount of logging chain, as you will be re-setting the pull every 17 feet or less :)
