Map storage at home

After my wife went through a New Year's cleaning of all our storage areas, I am left with a pile of various maps. I have a map table but it is waaaaayyy too big for our use (4x4 and weighs about 200lbs......and it's free to anyone that wants to pick it up on Whidbey Island, WA. Picture can be seen here )
I need something to organize the topo, green trails, folded AAA type maps and gazetters. something that is simple and cheap would be best.

any suggestions?

Visit some local architecture firms and see how they store blueprints.

If you are talking about USGS maps, consider storing them flat alphabetically.

I'm afraid that my system is not very sophisticated, but it seems to work for me.

I store all my folded maps in a plastic chest of drawers (pic below). My large-format maps (e.g. Raven state maps, etc.) are laminated and mounted and one can be seen just to the right of the chest of drawers in the pic. I have some USGS maps rolled in tubes (not good, but convenient for storage) and others in a desk drawer lying flat. The drawer is in a table/desk that allows me to bring them out and lay them flat on top.

Interesting. The one thing I think I failed to mention was I'm running out of space.

One idea that came to mind is to use something like a art portfolio, but cheaper. Get a couple of those big old binder clips, mount them on some kind of hardboard and then use another as a cover, like a book. Make sense? that way I can make it large but not thick and just hang it on the wall.

That's one solution. I have over 1000 maps, so the chest works best for me.

Anyway, my wall is covered with fly-rods. :)
