Mercedes Benz announced today that they plan to compete in the growing market for midsize pickups. The vehicle will compete with VW Amarok, Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Nissan Navara/Frontier and Mitsubishi Triton, among others. Matching these competitors, payload will be more than 2200 lb. The new vehicle will be developed by Mercedes' Vans division, the folks who designed the Sprinter.

That's the good news. The bad news is that the company has no plans to import the new truck to North America. That's how the Sprinter started, as well, so there's hope.

Fiat/Chrysler is also working on a pickup model. Prototypes were recently photographed testing in Europe.

And here's an article from a presentation by the head of Mercedes' van division. Apparently, Mercedes is reviving plans to partner with Nissan to build the new pickup. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the vehicle will be built in Nissan plants. Mercedes will provide engine technology, and will design the sheet metal.

So does this mean the new Mercedes/Nissan pickup will be built in Louisiana alongside the new Frontier, but not sold in USA? Sounds like it.

This should be a interesting vehicle no doubt I hope it takes some of the heritage that Mercedes-Benz has and isn't just a fluffy truck.
