what about a military hummer ambulance, converted to a camper... do you think its do-able? it would be big enough to sleep in im sure, and myabe have a kitchen. hmmm

If you get your measuring tape out (or just poke your head in one) you will find that a military humvee ambulance body has very little room inside. It's ok if you are lying on a litter in one but a Pinz with ambulance body has way more room and is tens of thousands cheaper in good shape.

Kind of cool. But the ride would suck (stiff), just like my m715.

I'd rather have a humvee for the simplicity, but finding one less that 20 yrs old that hasn't been beat on by a 19 yr old or driven through the surf is difficult -- as is registering them. H1's are dot approved and much more comfy for long distance with better seats, a/c and noise insulation. As long as you maintain a humvee/h1 properly (most don't) they'll run forever and go anywhere they'll fit. Most don't know how to drive them either, as evidenced by a plethora of newby drivers looking stupid on youtube. If not properly driven or maintained, you'll need deep pockets or a mechanic on retainer. These are not trucks for the masses (only 11,000 sold to civilians) but they're easy to work on and easy to find parts/accessories for.

I do like what many here have done with their tacomas (a very dependable platform to build on) -- might be a better, more economical way to go unless you are into hummers. I also really like the mog and the pinz -- very cool and capable rides.

I'm not sure of the exact measurments but the approx interior is just over 6' wide,7 feet long and 4.5' to 6' high (the attatched pictures are a shorter version). The top is pretty heavy, but humvees have a huge cargo capacity (4 to 5k lbs). Here are some pictures that show the int as well as the ext:

here's another top (fiberglass) that can be adapted to a civi hummer with a few mods. I've heard of them being picked up at military auctions for a few hundred bucks.

Also, here's a picture of about the coolest camper I've seen in a long time (it was posted here a while back):

I'm sure if you remove the appx 1" thick kevlar panels from the Ambulances you will lose alot of the top heavy feel from them. All HMMWV ambulances are armored. Mainly against shrapnel not bullets. If you do get one of the take-offs you see every once in awhile you may score a diesel fired heater which will run you out of the back, pay close attn to the outside temperature as you can burn one up if you have it on high and it's not cold enough outside. You'll have to plumb in an electric fuelpump but theres a port on top of the fuel tank so you don't have to rig something up. Alot of medics walk on the tops of these you'll probably have to re-seal them with a sealer of your choice.

ambulance bodies

I don't have anything against the Humvees (in fact I was ready to buy one when I picked up the Mog) it's just that the ambulance is a bit tight for an expo camper.I met up with a buddy that has a Pinz 6X6 ambulance this afternoon and it has way more room than the Humvee ambulance body (he has an H1 and an Alvis Stalwart as well).I will be looking at some Humvee ambulance body take offs this week but the measurements are in favour of the Pinz ambulance body.

I never knew they were kevlar lined. Kascar says they are about 1500 lbs each. Another guy who's done the conversion says it's 1300 lbs with all the interior seats, the air filter system and some of the diesel heater assembly. Once everything was removed 4 guys could lift it onto the truck (a 2 door hummer). I think he picked it up for $75! Needs a bit of tlc and some windows.

hey ron B where did you get those pics? i like the idea, for now im going to start my expeditions with an xj, i wouldent mind finding an h1 truck to turn into a camper, im not looking to do the rubicon just back roads.

heres a nifty idea. what if i put some kind of pop up custom camper on the top? kinda like a big shell on the top that would crank streight up, so you can stand up in it? im just tossing around ideas.

The HML (above link) has all the info you'll need to start learning. Do a search and check out the hummer knowledge base. Don't consider buying a vehicle like this (hummer, mog, or pinz, etc...) without fully understanding what you are getting into.

762X39 -- I don't doubt you about the extra space in the pinz, I do really like them but know nothing about them and have never driven one. I only had some info about the ambulance shell and the helmet top on hand because I was looking into future options for my truck for longer excursions in distant lands.

Yeah, Dave I'm bringing dead posts back.

Found this one searching for pictures to figure out how to paint the 725 back to "OE" colors, while you are out at ECDD.

My 715 rides decent off road at about 8000 lbs... if the 725 still rides like crap once I'm done building it, I fully anticipate links and coils (out of a freightliner??? lol) to smooth it out. But hell, we are talking waaaay down the road, if ever.
