The Mongol Rally 2008 started today. The goal is to drive from Europe to Mongolia, having maximum fun and minimum impact along the way.
To make things more interesting and more affordable, rally cars are limited to engines of 1.0L, and motorbikes to 125cc. No support vehicles are allowed.
Starting points are London, Madrid and Milan. Finishing point is Ulaan Baatar. There is no established course. Each team must figure out their own route across more than 8000 miles of the Earth's surface to the finish line.
The rally organizer expects 200 vehicles to participate. Each team has to raise about $2000 USD as an entry fee. The proceeds are donated to charity.

The "Smaller is Better" team, driving a Subaru Sambar "kei" van, is blogging at

They intend to continue on after the rally and drive around the world.
