Montero starting issues

I have a 1998 montero sport ls not wanting to start has good altnater new starter I had it tested at my local automates store and it is good i putt it in and turn the key it still will not turn over ......on a side note this is my daily could use any advice possible I've already checked alot of wires and the usual

My service history had an incident where the mechanic found a failed fuel pump relay to be the cause. In addition to not starting the vehicle also had incidents where it would cut off during idle. If your electrical system's good you've probably got spark and crank (so there's your air)...all that's missing for the boom! is fuel.

MPI relay, starter relay, fuse, broken wire, there's a number of things between the starter and the key. To test, turn the key to the run position and put 12 volt power to the starter solenoid. (small single blade connector on the starter) my suggestion is to get a 4 foot piece of wire, put a blade connector on one end and put that on the starter, turn the key to the 'run' position and then jump the solenoid by touching the wire to the battery positive. This will engage the starter solenoid and turn the engine over which will likely start the truck. A less mechanical test (not making the engine run) is unhook the solenoid wire and put a test light on it, then have someone try to start the truck, if the wire gets power when they try to crank the engine over, the system is fine and the starter is bad. If it doesn't get power, there's an issue upstream (fuse or relay)

No prob.... I am getting power to the signal wire I have corrosion on the big wire from the battery to the starter I going to new wire and try again I've put a volt meter on this thing a few times now Im mechanically inclined ...this is my first Japanese car there kind of a pain in the ***

I don't know about the sports but the ignition switch is known to fail on occasion in the full size monteros...happened to me. Could be something to look into.

I just replaced ignition switch, really easy to take out and test with screwdriver, if you have an alarm that could be a possibility too

They're no more of a pain than any domestic. You're just talking out of your *** ;)

If you're getting power to the solenoid wire and you've ohm tested the power cable (i assume that was the first thing you did since you're "mechanically inclined" lol) with good results, you have a bad starter, pull it and get it bench tested. If the cable didn't ohm test correctly, that'll be the culprit.

If you have corrosion on the primary wire chances are that corrosion extends up and under the sheath of the wire. I had to replace a buddies starter primary wire on his Audi S4 when the 9ft long cable shorted out in the middle due to it being a low spot where water pooled and corroded the cable. 2 "high end shops that specialize in Audi's" missed it. I used jumper cables to power the starter and that is how I figured the primary had a dead short. The wire was stiff as hell due to the corrosion so if the wire ISN'T reasonably flexible I would bet a 6pack of Messican Coca Cola that is your issue. I never buy "factory" wires for the starter as I can get a nice cable custom made by the place that rebuilds alternators/starters/electrical motors that is beastly for about half of what I can find "OEM" skinny wire.
